Strafing isn't the problem.
The ability to instantly change direction with no loss of speed is the problem.
Soneone who is just strafing can be taken out. Someone doing the epilepsy jitterbug can break hit detection.
Nerfing strafe speed failed to work To fix the problem.

It should be a relatively easy thing to add, considering HAVs have inertia.

I think inertia would actually give more value to higher skill strafe patterns like circle strafing and figure eights than just going left/right. I think that strafe game play is an important aspect of Dust that needs to remain, but as it stands now it's too simplistic.
The great thing about inertia play could also be that you open up a whole new avenue of modules that could effect inertia as well as equipment that could impact it as well.

That and you can actually aim ata strafer with inertia.
People might be forced to rely on advanced tactics or, God help us, cover, concealment and not running straight at people then wiggling a bit.

+1 for inertia / non-instantaneous acceleration

The primary reason I can't kill stealers is because I can't track from left to right as fast as they change direction. Inertia would fix this and I'd love to see it.

Can you just learn to aim or leave the FPS games to those of us who can?

Hit detection isn't broken, but your gun game might be.

Sorry. so says someone who;s gungame is dependent upon being able to avoid hit detection with the strafe dance.

Sorry. Lead, all modern shooters have inertia to varying degrees. Halo has it, probably the closest thing to DUST in terms of gameplay.
It exists for a reason, you can't react to something that is instant. You have to either by psychic or be lucky, there is no skill involved in hitting a strafer that isn't just going left to right in a predictable fashion.

Agreed.
Its one thing to strafe, its another to be able to strafe while spiting the laws of physics.
