So we got this game from PS+ a few days ago. I didn't think much of it. Guess I kinda judged a book by its cover... I was almost not even going to download it. Glad I did.
That was almost a mistake. Don't make that mistake. Play it. If you have PS+ and a PS4, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by skipping this masterpiece over because of the screenshots.
So I decided to download and boot it up yesterday afternoon. I just finished it. Its a short game. Lasted me about 3-4 hours of actual gameplay. But it was GOOD. Real good. Reminds me of Journey in this regard. Compressed, but amazing.
Its an isometric hacknslash like strategy game. Its all about figuring out the best way to do something, but you can just wing it if you want as the game isn't too hard(the game is only as hard as you make it, due to its genius way of implementing difficulty).
The part of this game that is probably the best is the music. Its really, really ******* good. Easily the best OST I've ever heard for a videogame, ever. Every track is just beautiful, and I'll have them stuck in my head for a nice long time. (Unless you really cannot get the game, don't look up the OST on YouTube though. The music is a very important part of the story, and listening to it would be sor t of spoiling it, so don't do it.) The story is definitely top shelf. Not the very best I've ever experienced (that goes to Journey), but still real damn good. The Characters a good. At first the game feels like the characters might be pretty hollow, just set pieces, but the exposition take awhile, and they really flesh out into deep and complex characters. The artstyle is unique and very cool throughout the entire game. It really gives Cloudbank a unique atmosphere. , and it's an atmosphere that's easy to like.
The only things I didn't like about the game were some of the mechanics. The combat, while good still, just wasn't really my thing. It didn't ever feel like a chore, but once the novelty of a new Function or slot wore off, it was just not the kind of gameplay I tend to like. They at least made sure the enemies never got stagnant though, so I would often find myself switching up tactics as I progressed, and thats what kept the combat from feeling like a chore for me. I think it was just the V.A.T.S. like combat that turned me off from it. I would have actually preferred a more real time approach, but that just wasn't viable, but I can see why they did what they did considering the way the story and lore is set up.
All in all though, this game isn't ever leaving my harddrive. I have to recommend it. It would feel wrong not to, as I get the feeling that a lot of people might be skipping the gem over like I almost did, and this is one of those games that should be experienced.

They came out of nowhere with one of the most inventive and technically impressive games of the 21st century, then managed to follow it up with a title that's just as incredible. If they can pull of the hat trick them I'm gonna pledge them my firstborn.

Was a little disappointed with the PS+ games before we got them, ended up enjoying both Apotheon and Transistor.

There is also Apotheon on ps4 for free (ten quid on steam lol) which is really good if you like greek art and has suprising depth.

I don't think I'll like it as much as I loved Transistor, but I think its good so far. I'll probably play it some more tomorrow.
