Salutations, Scott. And "Welcome. SoldierGǪ You're about to enter a universe ofGǪwealth, destruction, death, etc.
You're actually in a rare position, I think, Scott. I have met players who were new to Dust and don't want to play EVE, new to EVE and don't touch Dust, veterans of EVE and Newberrys in Dust,GǪ but you are a Newberry to both and seem interested in both games.
Be advised, while Dust 514 is intended to "supplement" or "assist" EVE-Online players in their game, the two games are VERY different from each other in important mechanics/factors/player-achievement methods, and are actually PLAYED very differently from each other.
We Dust players have the advantage that EVE players don't have: we get to carry out combat right ON THE SURFACE of EVE's planets (planets that EVE players gradually have the ability to plop factories and research colonies on, somewhat like you do in those Monopoly or City-builder PC games).
EVE players are the one who have the advantage of "travelling or transporting" from one planet to another, one space station to another, and between solar systems or star clusters that you see on our Dust Starmap.
Dust merc players cannot move from one place to another on the Starmap. If our two games ever reach he level of Server-stability that the game devs hope, only players in EVE-Online have the right to "transport" us as an army from one place to another as they hire us to assault or defend pieces of their planet for them.
For now, the Starmap is only important as the only LIVE link between stuff that happens in a few of our matches (Faction Warfare and Planetary Conquest matches only) and changing ownership of real estate in the EVE players' matches. I follow the Starmap routinely, just to notice how some solar systems lose ownership (like WWII Germany got chopped up into East Berlin, West Berlin, etc, yuck). Some of those systems on the Starmap change owners every week. And the Starmap is also good for familiarising yourself with the Lore History that you will probably be exposed to as you play EVE. It's cool to know WHERE regions like "Stain" and "Molden Heath" (and the home where your own merc originates from ) actually are.
But I'm afraid that is all your Starmap is useful for at this time, Scott. It is live, and very animated from what it used to look like a year ago, and has some cool menu controls, and is even detailed enough to tell you what KIND of facilities have been planted on certain planets by actual EVE players. But it only amounts to a school-map, and you can't use it to transport yourself anywhere. Hope this ton of info is useful to you.

Scott, you get into Factional Warfare by showing to CCP that you've "earned it". No kidding, right now as a Newberry, you have been quarantined in a part of the game called "Battle Academy". It's called an Academy, because it is a novice-phase that's supposed to be giving you the chance to learn: "how a player survives combat threats on a Dust map", "how controlling the right A-B-C Objectives in the right way wins a match", "what actions in the match earn WPs and how many", and "what combat actions from you are the team-helping and match-winning tactics the game devs hope you will use when playing Faction and PC matches".
GǪIn the typical fps, you don't normally have to learn these things. Until the devs feel you've had enough exposure in Battle Academy to become fully aware of Dust's unusual "work hard to help teammates more--run around racking kills for your own self-interest less" attitude, you are LOCKED out of Faction matches.
Faction Warfare mode will "unlock" when the grand total of WarPoints you've accumulated from all the matches you've played reaches a certain number. When I played Dust over a year ago, Faction unlocked when I reached 25,000 WP total,GǪbut these days the required number is much lower (12,000 or so???).
Trust me, Scott,...Faction matches not only cause slight changes to ownership percentages on the Starmap, but also ruin some of your fellow players in ISK and LP when you carelessly injure them with reckless actions. Injured or accidentally killed teammates get really pissed, and we argue that new players aren't kept long enough in Battle Academy OR aren't learning enough to be any value to their buddies in our Faction matches.
So, as you work you way toward graduation from Battle Academy stage, keep thinking two of the hardest fighting-terms to learn in Dust: "go assist that guy over there" and "win for your teammates".
Have fun out there. If played right, it's an interesting game!
