I've played the beta, the open beta, and I've been playing maybe once or twice every 4-6 months. I wonder if dropships are still terrible and a waste of my time. I've always wanted to be a pilot, but dropship very got any love. I even tried to go the "no skill points" route and it was too expensive. Do they get points for putting in work now, or should I just leave them alone? I've only face one or two dropship pilots in my Dust career. They didn't seem happy at all.. |

They are in a bit of a better place right now, but there were a few issues that happened and we're currently going through a 'fotm' where almost everyone has level 5 min commando & proficiency 5 wiyrkomi swarms... Which makes it next to impossible to use dropships. There are changes coming through but it's not 100% when they'll arrive or what they'll do.

Hi! I've been flying since 1.3 and am one of the better pilots in Molon, even have regular participation on PC matches.
Dropshipping is a very skill intensive role to play, both in SP and player skill. The state of AV makes running any fit below the few optimal fits pretty risky, especially for an inexperienced pilot. However, if you're willing to put in the time, thought, and ISK to develop your skills, it can be a very rewarding and beneficial skill.
While ADSs are usually what people think about when they mention dropships, the STD dropships received a decent buff a while ago. They got a decent buff the their base HP, as well as rewarding WP for transport over 100m and for mCRU spawns. I feel like they are in a very good spot now, the only real problem is that few players utilize them.
If you ask for my advice, it would be to skill into something on the ground so you can make some ISK when not flying (either due to lack of funds, too much enemy AV, or just a bad map).
Dust is there! I was real!

I've had a bit of a crush for dropships ever since the start of open beta too, but their performance wasn't very good for most patches.
These days, as a mostly non-assault dropship pilot, I'm sort of ok with them. My Myron has over 8000 hp against railguns, even if I activate my hardener after I've been hit by the first shot. That puts me in a position where a proto FG can't take me down in one clip and it takes a damage modded proto railgun four consecutive shots to kill me. All this while carrying two advanced small turrets and having a mCRU, which now grants a lot of WP per match.
I still often get taken down by squads which use excessive force (e.g. 3 swarmlaunchers shooting me at the same time) or due to being flipped over by a single FG-shot because of dodgy knockback-calculation, but I also get to pick up and drop off people while providing covering fire with relative confidence.
It's all about what your expectations are. If you get angry that a skilled Swarmlauncher is capable of shooing you away permanently in a 175 m radius, this may not be the role for you. If you can get enjoyment out of taking an underdog-role further than what other think is possible this may be the role for you.
P.S.: Personally, it took me about 20 mil SP into dropships specifically to make them work. If you invest less your experience may vary. |

I would say hold off. I've been proto swarmer for a long time and DS pilots were basically non stop pinata points for me. Really bad pilots I'd kill outright with 3 volleys. Really good pilots I never killed but I basically negate them from doing anything in the battle but running around in circles.
I have many corpmates that still run them but from comms I can sorta tell they're never happy about their engagements. I've since moved onto Forge Guns. I'm at the point now where I don't engage a DS pilot unless they're being a particular pain to my team.

if you really love to fly then yes it's worth it.. there's been matches where my MCRU grimness/XT-1 gunner have turned the match around but you have to have patience for when it's good because the next match could be a fail. some nights i've actually made isk flying other nights i've lost.. so you kinda break even. it's kinda a steep learning curve but yea imo it's worth it, maybe not to my team but to me personally it is. i just fly pubs tho. iirc i think i have 16 mil sp into it..
there's cheaper fits than that tho that rely on hardeners. my rep and shield recharge skills are maxed because i fly a buffer/rep fit and managed to fit 120mm complex armor plates/enhanced heavy rep/MCRU/XT1 after skilling into armor optim 5.. that fit only cost 200k and if ppl use the MCRU it can sometimes have a big factor in victory. |
