I honestly don't know. My guns never seem to kill anyone. I die a lot. My assault sucks. Really the only thing I seem to be remotley good at is being a logi, and even then I'm still lackluster at that. I ruthlessly, relentlessly, and repeatedly get stomped into the ground by people with proto sh*t and BPOs that only leave room for a profit. I just feel like I don't stand a chance at all. Not against the people who pay for SP boosters and 450000 in one game while I get a pathetic 7000.
But I get it sp =/= skill but do you honestly think you could do as good as you might with proto, if instead you were using militia?
I f*cking doubt it. |

You could always try playing the DUST Forums instead. I got my lurking to lvl 5, and my sh*t posting to lvl 2. In hindsight I would reverse those. My constructive feedback is only to lvl 1, but it's rarely used on here because sh*t posting is so OP.

They are all bst*rds no doubt about it...
Try sneaking around a bit more - stick to cover. Maybe try a bit of scouting. Hack everything and ignore the main battle. Drop uplinks and remotes for extra points. You will still die but maybe a bit less. Plus it's a lot less frustrating than going head to head with a try hard. It's true you need to level up the core upgrades plus your armour shields etc..

Sheesh, somebody must've had a rough night of proto stomps! Honestly, try just having fun with the game in a less orthodox way. See if you can break an LAV out of the redline and go joyriding. Try to get a drop ship stuck to a light pole or tower. See if you can get a few long range plasma cannon kills. Build a melee fit. Put nova knives on a sentinel. Or just take a break, if the game isn't fun then give it a breather.

The most important things are warpoints and staying isk positive. Stomps are unavoidable so if you are getting your ish pushed in repeatedly r9 uplinks are your friend

that's a good one. running over proto gits is enormous fun so I second that suggestion.
in fairness felix, you must remember how frustrating an experience playing dust is at the beginning. I think the key is to accept your kdr is always going to be an embarrassment and take it from there. getting a single kill is an achievement to be proud of in the early days!

I advise against following the earlier poster's recommendation to spec into the forums.
It does not end well.
DUST is a frustrating game, tbh. How much total SP are you on? What are you currently specced into? What weapons are you using? Do you enjoy being a logi, or would you rather go slayer?
As a general gameplay tip - threat identification is very important. If you can recognise proto and certain types of gear quickly and at a distance you stand a better chance of avoiding them.

Have you considered logi? That's what I did when I first started because I had terrible gun game (still do ). It can cost a bit, but if you're helping the team it can really pay out. A standard fit with equipment costs about 30k iirc, but can easily land you +250k minimum a game. It definitely pays out more than slaying at lower skill levels.
The biggest thing it helped me with it the flow of battle. As a logi you need to go where you're needed to be the most efficient (i.e. die less). I always tried to think about where my team was (so I could help and be protected), where the enemy was, and where everyone was going (do we need links somewhere? is this objective unprotected? what about the CRU? etc). Doing this keeps you alive and your team supported.

You get out a duster, perhaps one made by Swiffer.
Gently rub it on a dusty area until dust is gone.

My honest recommendation is to find another game to play.
If you don't have ~20mil SP at this point you won't make it anywhere and with the money it take to buy enough boosters to get to that point you could easily purchase a better game.

As I was skilling up this character, all my SP went into vehicles. To make money I ran a mostly unskilled Dren scout and made enough to fund my ADSs (back when they were a mill a pop) and keep a positive KD. Granted I already knew a thing or two about gameplay, but those are only skills you can get through playing the game. Even now, I only ever run standard gear and still manage fine (even just yesterday I took on several proto suits).
Here's my advice to new players: for your first few million SP, run MLT fits with a repair tool and uplink. Follow your team around and learn how the vets play the game and join a decent corp where you have fun with the people you play with. After that, get your specialized suit and preferred weapon to ADV (and equipment if you're a Logi) and get your core skills up (shield, armor, fitting). To make a decently competent fit for pubs should only require probably 10m, if not less.

I f*cking doubt it. I have never understood why this game has levels of gear instead of just varieties of gear, unless it's too feed the egos of children and the pockets of a short sighted greed machine.
KDR matchmaking would patch all the patches into pure patchitudity.

Light frames or heavy frames are the way to go
If you want to keep playing assault style, I will suggest a militia heavy and a militia LAV
Militia Amarr or Galente Heavy Militia Heavy machine gun or your preferred light weapon Militia flaylock for those players you want to finish off Militia flux(unless you go for a caldari heavy)
with less than 10,000 ISK you can make Proto suits eat dust
Rail Rifle is also a good choice

Heres how you win. Perk into HMG and Gallente or Amarr Sentinel max out your armor skills and buy a LAV and drive around slaughtering everything in sight and if someone gets close to killing you just hop in your LAV and drive away. Odds are they will never fix it so it should last you for a while.
Edit: The guy who posted above me has the right idea but the Rail Rifle blows. Anti-Armor my ass lasers kill armor suits faster then a Rail Rifle. Also never try Caldari suits they are all reliant on shield tanking which is god awful.

This game breaks all of us...we all meet our match eventually and not every match is easy.
I'm a veteran...been here for a long time, have been through many different patches and problems and I've remote explosived, nanite injector, assault rifled, grenaded, LAV'd and P-R-A-Y-E-D with the best of them....
Just last night....a player named Crimson Shield owned my ass over and over and over....kin cat assault suit, set up with myofibril stim's for melee damage toting a plasma cannon and smg
He was so fast, I couldn't shoot him and he got close to me and wrecked me in my 967EHP logi suit in two melee shots. He killed me about 5 times straight and I couldn't do anything about it.
So don't sweat it...you'll get better, but you'll always get wrecked by someone at some time. |

Find a few friends, and play with them. When you're in a match, stick near each other. Teamwork is OP, and even militia suits can kill proto suits if they use good teamwork and superior numbers. See a squad of 6 proto suits at a letter? Regroup and go to a different one. See a particularly good player/squad in a match? Send them an email and ask for help -- I think you'll be surprised at how many people will help. |

Dust is already challenging enough when going up against full proto players with PC experience and no regard for ISK costs.
Going up against that solo? I would rather repeatedly get kicked in the nuts than play this game solo anymore. This last event was brutal playing solo, and I'm about ready for another break. Call me when player trading is real.
