Dusts P2W Rubicon has been crossed GÇô where does it go from here? GÇ£Crossing the RubiconGÇ¥ means passing the point of no return. ItGÇÖs a phrase that comes from Roman times where a river north of Rome was as far as any person could bring an army. Crossing that river represented an act of treason, war or possibly both.
How is this relevant to dust 514? Dust has been a champion of fairness in the F2P market, the gains from spending money were advantageous but at a level where those who did not spend money were not too far behind. Being a big spender may have got you more options sooner but everyone reached that point in a reasonable time where using the same suit and gun there would be a level playing field.
Slowly this model has been eroded as troubling changes took place.
-Basic BPO suits and guns still requiring an isk sink to get the best out of them have been surpassed with free suits of a similar level to a 30k complex fit basic suit.
-SP boosters giving a 50% increase in SP gained per battle and overtime gave a reasonable advantage of those who did not use them. Firstly there was more OMEGA boosters, and now triple stacking. This means that now a person spending RL money can get SPGÇÖs at a maximum rate (3xGÇÖs omega) 4xGÇÖs quicker than those who donGÇÖt which is too large a gap by far for the non AURUM player to stay in touch.
- Factional boosters, these are realistically dusts version of money boosters for battles. Yes its limited to factions and one type of battle but getting up to 75% more LP is huge. For that type of battle itGÇÖs the equivalent of gaining 75% more ISK per battle.
Yes the troubles have been brewing for a while, but due to in most cases the gradual nature of the changes people have not been as concerned as maybe they should. Although not a lot of content was being released, a lot of work had been done on the fundamentals such as balancing suits and weapons to make all play styles relevant as oppose to FOTM chasing. Balance has been dusts biggest problem historically and to most it seemed that finally we were getting to the point where we finally almost got there.
Then it came on the 03/02/2015, the day CCP marched its legions past the Rubicon with the release of Warlords. Warlords brought so much hope and promise with the concept of a customisable war barge that would give you bonuses to what you desired. Did you want more EHP and repair rate or XP and isk? The choices you made would benefit your character how you saw best. Everyone would be doing it so it was going to be down to personal choice and play style. The timescales and what would be released was unknown but there was a buzz about the game again.
What we saw a saviour was in fact a tyrant unleashed in the game. We were betrayed, the release of warlords was the foundation of P2W. What might take years to achieve through gameplay can be bought at the click of button, and most importantly of all balance has started to be taken away. A player who does not spent AURUM cannot conceivably achieve the same results as one who does in a reasonable timeframe. That player with the same set up as someone who splashed the cash will do several per cent less damage than one who has, beyond that if EHP/repair/hacking/speed ect Modules are released for the war barge which is surely to be the case the unbalance between the players will further increase.
With the ever increasing moneytisation of dust, it is not possible to understand where it will stop. More modules for the war barge are a given to give those big spenders a greater competitive edge in battle, ISK booster for pubs? Better suits and vehicles which are only AURUM purchasable? That thin line in the sand has been crossed and my trust has gone with it.
As a major GÇô I have spent significant real life money on dust and would have continued to do so to unlock more content such as suits and vehicles which everyone can aspire to and feasibly get in a reasonable time frame. The idea of fighting people who either I cannot compete with on a level playing field or who could not compete with me is off-putting and not something I signed onto. I was happy to pay for content, but this for the moment seems secondary to new money making ideaGÇÖs, Strong boxed, more BPOGÇÖs, More booster, war barges has been the theme of recent updates and very little substance besides that. Even if CCP released a lot of new content now including new models of vehicles (not re skinned), weapons, maps game modes ect which I desire I could not further invest in the game.

"Dust has been a champion of fairness in the F2P market"
I don't think it's ever been that. People were just happy spending a little bit, to get a little bit back. That's how all 'pay to win' models begin. Now you just have to pay more and people are beginning to notice.
Just to clarify, I'd suggest only games that have nothing unfair for people that pay are 'champtions of fairness'. Those games earn their money by making games people enjoy, rather than suggesting you buy something to 'improve' the game in some way.
Of course this is all opinion, some would say as long as you can still get something without paying (even if it takes a lifetime) is not 'pay to win.' |

After reading this I really think someone should turn this over to a reputable game review site. Someone with some pull that can try to reach out to CCP and dig into why Dust has taken this drastic turn.
Especially consider the end of life coming soon for the PS3 and no actual developer interaction from CCP on what the future holds. It almost feels damn near illegal for CCP to sell a product if they even have the slightest idea that it may be coming to an end..

Funny I live right on the banks of the Rubicon River within walking distance where it happened that fact!

The disparity in the time it takes to upgrade with aur vs not is large :(. What makes me upset is the fact that all the bugs in Dust have not changed. So now when i'm unable to play due to bugs i'm more upset. But hey, at least i've got shineys! even if i'm not able to play with them, or lose em because of a glitch.
