Right now the problem is there is such a shotgun blast of "Random Quantity over Random Quality" that targets too many demographics at once. I feel the whole system needs to be overhauled, so here's my terrible idea.
Remove the strongbox system we have now, and introduce new boxes.
Feel free to rename the following names, they are not the point:
- Decoder Keys, these drop a little more often then they currently do and are available for purchase, and occasionally show up in missions.
- Prototype Decoder Key, these drop as rarely as officer weapons. Purchasable for spitballfigure 2000 AUR, show up rarely in missions if you do 8 of them.
- Militia Strong Box: These drop only for players with five million SP or less and are uncommon drops every couple of matches or so, weighted heavily towards Skill Books and basic/ADV AUR gear or those handy packaged suits that require no skill, anything that CCP thinks new players actually want.
- Basic Strong Box: This is what we have now, a complete and utter gamble that tries to accommodate every audience. This will be the normal drop rate and most common for people above 5 million SP. These are also purchasable for AUR. It is balance dby it likely not giving you what you want, so why not make it an AUR sink? I aslo suggest doubling the "Worth" of these boxes for what it holds, but also make the damned things substantially more rare, like maybe a box or two every half dozen matches.
- High Security Strong Box: This sucker is A LOT MORE RARE non of this salvage 10 of the bastards in a round nonsense, this sucker drops maybe as often as officer weapons do in normal salvage, give or take. This beauty has a much higher "value" that is weighted for proto gear, limited edition gear such as quafe or prepackaged fits, and has a better chance then normal of dropping officer gear. Again this is a lot more rare, also not available for purchase for AUR, also takes a Prototype Decoder Key to open. People know this will actually carry good gear, will be excited when they get one, and have to either grind out the rare-as-hell drop, get it by completing something ridiculous like ten missions, or buy it for a dollar.
Not the greatest idea verbatim, but I hope my point gets across that currently the strongboxes we have now are NOT helping new players due to being so bloody rare for keys and so random of a drop of what is inside (You used this argument for justifying skillbooks as a strongbox drop).
They are also aggravating players due to 1 being spammed to a point of near-worthlessness, honestly why even bother having strongboxes if they are so common they are effectively limitless, Decoder Keys are what we care about and arguably you should just consolidate the concepts if you want to stick with the current system.
Also contributing to player aggravation is that they are simply too random in what is inside for a "one-size-fits-all" box, Why not split them into a couple of demographics so it is still a gamble but provides incentive for players to care about them. This way you can cater to new players with the SP books and sweet buckets of low level AUR gear, but also avoid pissing off veteran players by providing a rare box that provides less basic AUR gear and more Proto AUR gear, and encourages people to buy AUR if they at least have somewhat of an idea of what they are getting.
