Random historical fact here, swords were actually the least common weapon in ancient warfare due to the costly nature of production. Most infantry conscripts were peasants and could only afford polearms or blunt force weapons like maces or axes.

Not only that, any idiot could use a mace or a polearm. They are very entry level weapons compared to swords.
Blunt force weapons were cheap to make, easy to replace and reliable.
Standard polearm tactics involved standing with a group of other polearm users and just keep jabbing.
