They start with great base hp (compared to frontlines), a level 3 commando with a level 3 racial weapon is doing above proto-rifle damage with their racial weapons.
Some basic biotics and a fighting newberry has a chance in a squad. o.o

six logies under 3 mil sp, vrs six commandos under 3 mil sp, those commandos will walts right through.

Another commando and I have been taking some newberries in his corp under our wings and they have started picking up commandos on their own, and it's been a vast improvement over what they were doing before. I've seen them posting outstanding scores in matches, and pulling warpoints at a vets level.

All with a hotbox the size of Peter Griffin and even less slots than their Frontline suit.
They may be doing the same damage as a PRO weapon but that means very little since it's only 5% more than the ADV weapon, not to mention that the vets s/he'll be fighting against will have Prof skills and most likely damage mods, all of which grant will yield more damage than the newberry.
Not sure what kinda squad you run, but a new player in a Commando would never be able to keep up in the ones I'm in.

I love commandos and use them regularly, but it's not the best suit for a beginner, though I'm sure some can excel at it, most will not. I guess if they have a good squad to show them the ropes it will work out, but I would never just recommend to a new player to build a commando right off the bat. I recommend every new player build a logi and learn survival skills first, not killing. Once you can survive well in this game, then you can start the killing. This is just my opinion, feel free to tell me to flock off.

Use a light suit to learn survival sklls. From there it gets easier and a bit more enjoyable.

The answer can be yes, because they are single task suits, but the real answer is no. If i have to suggest a starting suit, i would suggest assault, it's a little more versatile, you can feel the change between tiers and you can try different styles before chose what you prefer.
Commando are more for someone who already knows the game and what he will do so he can go straight to the point.
EG. want to snipe, then i chose calmando, skill sniper rifle and damage mods.
Situational awareness also known as passive scan.

You'll learn to play smart with 300ish ehp.

No. Without Shield/Armor Upgrades to 5, they have mediocre eHP, and not only that, they won't be getting anything out of the suit until level 3 in it, and their respective tank mods.
That, and they have no ewar, a huge hitbox, and slow as molasses.
I wouldn't say it's a good spec for newbies. |

Best suits for beginner : logi and sentinel. Logi to farm wp/sp/isk. Sentinel cuz it requires very little amount of SP compared to other roles.
Commando is for more experienced players.

If logis are using Laser Rifles/Mass Drivers/ Plasma Cannons
Then those Commandos are screwed

With the Commando you can get similar WP to a logi, but it is much more enjoyable.
