Yes. Another one of these post.
But in all seriousness. How can we make NPE better? Asides from match making?
Dust really needs new players.
PvE is out of the question unless Rouge makes up his mind. Making tierside matches will be exploitable to the max.
Right now all I can think off is increasing the WP count from 5k to lets say 20k. Because right now, a lucky newberry can reach 5k WP im 3 matches per say. And that is not even close enough to understand wvwrything that goes on in the battlefields of Dust.
How can NPE be made better aside from matchmaking?

I think 15k would be a better baby step.
Also, adding a video tutorial highlighting your HUD workings, the marketplace, and a race's main strengths and weaknesses.
The HUD tutorial teaches the player what is armor and shield, the difference in scan ranges, profiles, and precision, how to know the current clone reserves available as well as MCC damage taken/dealt. Also, how you can view enemy Intel by aiming at them, and gathering even more info by aiming down sights.
Marketplace tutorial would show you the market place, how fittings work, and how replenishing supplies work.
The other one is self explanatory. |

First, the Battle Academy should have it's graduation requirements lifted to 150k WP (or 1k kills).
Next, the AI who used to explain the game mechanics ("would you like to know more?") needs to return. it gave a much more in-depth tutorial than the current one so I'm not sure why it was removed in the first place.
Then, there needs to be a starting tutorial that explains weapon and game mechanics to the players, like most other games have these days.

Rattati has spoken about this slightly...
He was talking about some new player game modes that restrict players based on Meta of their fitting.
You will see Meta fitting changes put on the road plan for Rattati..
He plans for everything to have a Meta level... Then based on The matches total Meta fitting restriction level with Guns, Suits/Vehicle and modules ... Restrict players from bringing to high of a fitting.
While still giving some freedom in how they fit to meet the requirements.
Then have end game reward amounts based on the level of difficulty you choose for meta restrictions.
But this is a giant can of worms that could be alot of work figuring out numbers and how to value one item over another. |

I a still wondering why Way of the Mercenary was taken out of the game.
It only played right before you would go inside your MQ and it as only for fresh new players.
It helped explain how the battlefield of this game works.

If I was a new player, I would like to understand the lore and all the workings to have a good experience with the game. That way I can keep playing and striving for a certain play style. I would like to know how to properly spend my SP and how to gain more isk and sp. I would like to play with people of my skill level, I would like to get higher isk payouts for winning contracts, so that way we can fund our next match better than the losing team.
If we have more players, then we can have 24 vs 24 and the battles will get more intense. |

I've just had a couple of friends return to the game after they setup a char over a year ago and they faced the same issues... bad matchmaking and no where to get used to the game.
i've mentioned plenty times before of either having a system where you choose the 'difficulty' where you select what regions of space you want battles to take part in.
1.0 - 0.5 - MLT/STD gear only, LAVs only 0.1-0.4 - ADV gear (and below), Vehicles 0.0 - PRO gear (and below), Vehicles
if thats too difficulty to implement then an 'Academy+' mode which is MLT/STD only with no vehicles that vet players can go into with new players to let them find their feet a bit. yes vets with 80m sp will have an advantage but i ran the numbers through and there is a 500-600hp difference between standard unskilled suit and proto fully skilled whereas there is only 100 or so HP difference between MLT/STD suit/modules unskilled and skilled which means its more balanced for newer players and they have an oppertunity to actually have fun in the game because currently due to the limited player pool and new plaer in a squad with a vet is thrown up againt the proto stomping corps and its pushing tghem away.
afdter my friend died 30times in one skirmish he just told me he wasn't havign fun and didnt' see the point of playign becuse he couldn't do anything due to being killed instantly by a full proto assault with a proto breach/rail/scram/laser anytime he spawned.
this is the issue that we're having with new players as the proto tryhards are still forcing them away, not becaus eof the matchmaking being 'bad' as such but because the player numbers are so low that theres no option but to sling in a squad of mixed noob/vets into a match vs a squad of proto stompers
Never argue with an idiot. they bring you down to their level and beat you through experience

150k WP is an excellent idea, and a reasonable amount to ensure newberries to be tought the ropes w/o getting-face-proto-smashed, Atiim. It is important to note though, that the Academy needs an Opt-Out option too: general, permanent premature Academy-leaving for not-so-new-berries and temporary opt-out on a match-to-match basis for players that joined a corp and want to train with non-Academy corp mates in regular battles w/o having to leave Academy right away. |

I would also like to see unique daily missions for new players. These daily missions do not award encrypted strongboxes or gear. They have small completions requirements* and award ISK and SP only. Lower completion requirements give new players a morale boost and that nice "completion" feeling that missions provide.
*: Kill 3 players, perform 5 kill assists, hack 2 primary objectives, destroy 1 installation

More players leave this game than join it.

More players leave this game than join it. CCP doesn't ignore the pleas, I don't think. If they had a big dev team with lots of artists and what not they could produce a puesdo-VR thing where new players shoot at NPCs for a while before entering the battle academy, then the "really real world" with us vets.
But they don't have those resources.
And yes, CCP games typically have high churn. Look at Eve Online; it takes a particular type of person to keep playing a game that routinely destroys things you invest months and months of time into obtaining.
Do you think WoW would have the subscribers it does if every time you died almost all of your raid gear was destroyed? Fuuuuck no. They would have players leaving by the thousands every day.

I understand where you are coming from. But everyone now agrees that we need new players. Or this game will keep growing short.
Making NPE better would make some newberries stay.
I don't want an overly complex NPE.
Just that they play 3-6 matches and they are ready playing with Proto guys.

As a relatively new player who has stuck with the game but seen friends and acquaintances not manage to last I think that this is a difficult one to address because it is as much about the players mindset as it is about the game and it is, I think, a difficult one to fix without losing a lot of what makes Dust, for me at least, worth sticking with.
I think one of the problems is simply down to what is expected of a FPS console game. Almost everyone who plays online FPS games is used to the play style of running and gunning twitch shooters and the kill or be killed battlefield that they provide. What I liked about Dust is that it doesn't work so much like this but for people coming over from CoD, Halo, Battlefield etc the fact that you can't just jump in and slay seems to be a real sticking point.
Some form of filtering based on meta levels seems to be the logical way of lessening the impact of being placed in front of an opponent that you literally cannot kill in a starter suit but at the same time doing so seems, again in my opinion, to diminish the game somewhat...... but I know all too well how deeply frustrating it is to be mowed down in a frontline fit in a march you cannot win by a proto sentinal with a proto HMG, whether you try to fight it out at the front of the battle, or pick off stragglers, or hack random installations, or hide in a crate (The Mrs has threatened to put out a swear jar when I'm playing 'that' game).
The last bit of that whaffle is important, I think, unless the game is just going to be developed more towards a twitch shooter there needs to be more of an emphasis put on the fact that it's not all just about K/D because it is very easy to become disheartened and see unfairness everywhere when all you see is a 0.33K/D as the standout stat. I think there maybe needs to be more incentive for people to feel that they are doing a good job even if they're not getting kills.
Nul sec etc may help this but also faces problems of player numbers and diversity. |

Just letting players know that matchmaking is only half the NPE when it comes to a game as "complex" as this. |
