If you're at a distance where you can manage the heat before the enemy get close then the charge can instill a lot of alpha fear in the enemy, make them panic or if it's a scout with low ehp you can alpha the scout in one shot. As for my favorite assault fit, I'd say this: Scout G/1 Series Complex Shields x2 Complex Reactive Plate x2 Complex Armor Plate Nanohive Compact Nanohive Breach Assault Rifle Breach Scrambler Pistol Core Locus Grenade Although I do have access to PRO Min and Am Assaults, this cheap little Scout fit is my favorite throw-away fit for all-purpose assaulting. It has decent speed, shield and armor regen, an HP pool nearing 700, the best anti-infantry grenades, and a Breach Assault Rifle and Scrambler Pistol with Prof. 5 skills. Oh, it's only around 40k per fit as well.
