OK, so I'm a casual player and still a relative newberry in this game and I was wondering about squads and corps. As you can see at the moment I'm not in a corp and I have rarely if ever squadded up as I don't have comms.
I was just wondering, as someone who still runs starter fits etc what would be expected of me in a corp/squad? Also what is the best way about getting started at it all?
Should I just look for open squads at the start of a game and try my luck? I feel that, in my case, it'd be more about not getting in the way than actually helping consistently!

As a new player, squading is going to be the only way you enjoy this game. it's very tough on newer players due to how big the gap is in lifetime SP. The benefit of a corp is a consistent ability to squad with the same set of people so you learn their play styles and get tips and tricks.
Few options for you.
1. I highly recommend looking into the Learning Coalition. They are a corp that is dedicated to helping out new players. They're made from several different corp members that refer those players on to corps that best fit into.
2. You can run off to the recruitment forums and jump into the first corp that will accept you.
3. I personally found this to be the best way to find a corp.
- At the start of a match, jump into the most full squad. If they kick you don't be offended, move on.
- If you really jive with them, stick around for a few matches if they let you. Don't be turned off if they all have different corp names. They might be from the same alliance.
- If a few matches go really well, tell them gg and ask if they have a public channel for future squadding
- If after a few days, you can lfs in that channel and have an averagely great time, ask if they are recruiting if you don't get an invite first.
The reason the public channel is important is I've been a part of really well known corps with really good corp numbers, however, NONE of them were in my timezone. Therefore I was virtually alone and being taxed for it. A public channel is a good way to see numbers of squadmates available around the times you're usually on. It should also give you an idea of a sampling of the people you'll be squadding with to give you a much better picture if this is the corp for you.
Every corp is different and there is one out there that will fit you perfectly so happy hunting. Good luck OP.

I would not recommend joining Public Squads in the squad finder too often. While you will find some really cool people in Public Squads, you will also find the reprobates that are too socially revolting to have made their own friends, and it is those annoying people that you will tend to remember, which will give you a very poor impression of the game.
You are much better off joining a Corporation which is friendly to new players, and has enough of a player base to have open squads running regularly.
My Corp, Immortal Guides, is a training Corp which regularly takes in players with less than a week of experience in the game, and helps them develop into experienced players. Between the many Corporations in the Learning Alliance there are plenty of players for you to squad up with. Once you are a member of a Corporation you will see Corporation and Alliance Squads listed at the top of the Squad Finder page.
DUST University is another training Corp, and there are other Corps who are willing to take new players.
If you have not done so already, please go into options and activate the Voice option. Even without a mic this will allow you to hear the people who do have micGÇÖs.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.

lee's summary of tactics is excellent.
While lacking a microphone makes things harder for you, it should not be a show stopper if you make an effort to comment between battles in the squad chat. Particularly with gg or other praise. Don't be afraid to thank them for their patience and tell them you are new to Dust. Actually, it is much more likely that you will get kicked from a squad for being obnoxious WITH A MIC than for lacking a mic altogether or even doing poorly in the battle.
Ask for and, over time, build up a collection of chat channels, and then start putting lfs in them when you sign in, perhaps stating your role at the time so folks know what they are getting when they pick you up. If you never get picked up in the channel, remove it.
While writing in squad chat, consider NOT asking lengthy questions about your fittings. Instead, consider adding friendly-sounding squadmates as contacts, and sending a mail to them afterwards to ask longer questions. You may not get a reply (and if you do, it might come with an unwanted corp invite), but questions that require long answers can be really annoying for a squad that is rapid-deploying.
Try your best. Be friendly but not pushy. Don't hang with obnoxious or abusive players.
FPS = First Person Support. Kills win battles but it's kinda hard to kill if you're dead and out of ammo.

Thanks for the replies folks I'll be sure to heed the advice, I'm already on the Learning Coalition Chat but am more of a lurker than a poster. Maybe I'll step things up a bit this month whilst the mrs is away.
Didn't want to jump in somewhere and ruin everyones day esp without a mic.
Anyway I've got loads of crop invites from this guy Duna so that seems like a good place to start  |

Careful joining a duna corp. Havent seen it first hand, but have many ppl say his corp tax rates ( anything above 10% is too high) as he uses new guys to farm isk for the corp. Again, not intentionally trashing the guy, just a word of warning

I second that be careful. Being a part of a corp is great and if he's going to help you fine, but a high tax rate is only there to milk you for all you're worth and as young of a character as you are, it's a really important time to not fall victim to that...

Cheers guys.....warned off Duna very early on. Mainly based on my initial suspicions of someone who spams out invites to every starter corp player they come across.
Never a serious consideration for me, going to be checking in on one of the Learning corps to see how things work at some point I think.
The other guy who puts out lots of invites is Commander of the Black...... and I've certainly done thier K/D no harm, any info on them? |

Seems they are specifically looking for German players. That doesn't necessarily mean all of them are in different timezones tho. But in case it matters, just fyi.

in a serious squad all you have to do is watch your logis back and make an effort to regroup with the squad as much as possible.. dont run away from the squad or theres really no point in being in one. use your radar to keep together, a guy without a mic can still do his job, cover the flanks, keep the core of the sqaud- the logi and heavy from getting flanked.. it's ok to run ahead sometimes but do it in a leapfrog way. experienced players can tell when your a good team player.. you don't really need a mic. awareness and moving with your squad is more valuable. it's a you watch my back i watch yours mentality and if done right you don't die much and the kills are distributed . it takes the same effort from all members tho, if someone is not regrouping to move with the squad it's not the squads job to look out for him or to try to keep up when he's running blindly into enemy lines.
