I'd rather be an entrepreneur, a lone wolf who coordinates with no team, and thus enjoy the game in a way I feel is pleasing and not really arduous but Dust is a basic lobby shooter and thus does not satiate my thirsts for a fulfilling lone-wolf style.
I'm not just talking about a lone wolf combat style, I'm talking about being a entrepreneur, investor, explorer, treasure seeker, roamer. I'm talking about working to serve my own interests and to do so alone, it's how I prefer and work best.
Now, this lobby rinse and repeat stuff is super boring, it goes without saying. It's been said over and over again but SANDBOX SANDBOX SANDBOX. But how?
Step 1: A Battle without sides
What if there was a battle without sides? Think of a poker game. Everyone plays for themselves, everyone buys in themselves. Now imagine a dust battle that had no objectives other than the ones you set for yourself and the clone "buy-ins" had to be met by yourself. Within this map where there are no objectives there could be 16 some people all actively scavenging material, mining data, thwarting the plans of others, fighting bots, etc. This of course is a very distant and probably nonexistent future but it's fun to think about.
A key element of this should be the inability to merely quit the game and maintain the goods acquired, rather you'd have to escape with any goods you wanted to the equivalent of a safehouse, just to make clear for future reference.
Step 2: A Reason to explore: Gimme the loot
Art team, chop chop! I want to see treasures worth seeing, seeking, and dying for! Vanity BPCs! "Lost" weapon variants! Give people reason to roam the map, reason to double cross, reason to cooperate, a reason for everything and everything.
Ideas include but are not limited to: Burst Mass Drivers Assault PLCs (automatic) Neon Green-Black Maddys The old vanity BPC suits and more 20GJ Blaster that shoots red etc.
**** that is replaceable but hard to find. This also opens up the whole player driven market too. I'm tired so I'm gonna stop here

As a player who has officially been a loner for a year and six days I can sympathize with your resolve.
If Legion or some other successor to Dust 514 comes about, I see great possibilities in the future.
I imagine a game where you are an individual. You are a mercenary. You set your goals and you strive for them with your own hands. I imagine making virtual contracts with CEO's to protect their assests. The more your infamy grows the more your expertise on the battlefield is worth. I forsee great customizability with such detail that no player would ever feel confined by their roles. You could be a specialist or you could not. Salvage would be wide and far, but the truly rare items would require great compromise on your part to discover. There are many things that could have achieved with Dust had there been as realistic developers as there are now.
I look to the future to reach the stars that we ourselves have shot so high in to the heavens.
For now I do enjoy your idea as it reminds me of an idea I myself posted here long ago.
If Mercs could be deployed to crash sites of EVE ships this game would become much more entertaining. An EVE ship explodes high above and its remnants come tumbling down to the worlds. You, as well as other mercs are deployed there by various corporations. You can either choose to get the ISK price of all the loot you gathered or be payed in half the loot you got. It would make things interesting.
Put your flags up in the sky.
And wave them side to side.
Show the world where you're from.
Show the world we are one.
