I exchange fire with a guy in an assault dropsuit with assault rifle, and I'm using a calmando pro and a kaaliokta rail rifle. He killed me and only manage to damage his armor a bit destroyed his shield though. I forgot the name of his gear but I think its adv or pro but come on calmando pro with pro rail rifle beaten by an adv or pro assault suit and assat rifle, damn. I have complex damage mod to boot and a adv armor plate, damn. Same thing happen against a guy in assault suit and a combat rifle also both adv or pro I think, killed me with same result. I thought pro calmando with a pro rail rifle is kick ass, now I,m thinking of another refit. |

Yes, you better respec. The only good thing players like you can do for the game is to give moneys to CCP so they can improve it...
One of the few assaults you'll find in a PC match!

A Commando will almost always lose in a 1v1 fight, especially against an assault. Assaults are quicker, have smaller hitboxes, and have close to the same hp you do.
If you are playing Commando, stick to range and play with a squad. If you want better odds in 1v1, run an Assault Rail Rifle.

If he was a proto assault he probably had more HP then you, also you are using damage mods instead of shield mods so you are vulnerable against players who can spit similar fire power as you.

The best way to use commando is to use synergy in weapons
I use an amarr commando so my top 2 fits are as follows:
1. Viziam laser rifle (long range) six kin assault combat rifle (short range)
2. Viziam scrambler rifle ( antishield) kaalakiota rail rifle (anti armor)
Using the long range laser to melt enemies and rinse them with cr
Or burst down shields then blap with rr from range
Both terminate suits very efficiently
For calmando I advise tactical sniper/kaalakiota rail rifle
Don't underestimate the sniper, once went 37/0 in an ambush with sniper used at 80-120 m range

lol. I was hitting him head on. After destroying his shield did a bit of damage to his armor then i'm dead. All i can say is thats a damn poerful assault rifle. The only thing i can thinm of is his headshotting me while i was shooting in the body. Thats the only way i accepted it. |

Toe To Toe Tips
Strafing
You must strafe in a toe to toe fight.
Even slow strafing is better than none.
Try not to cross their line of fire multiple times, which means that you may end up strafing in one direction.
Keep your weapon pointed IN THEIR IMMEDIATE DIRECTION and move your cross hairs over them as much as possible
Cover
You must keep cover nearby and gain a tactical advantage by controlling the cover between you.
Whoever is closest to cover is controlling the cover.
Never start an engagement unless you control the cover, or are certain that your suit/weapon are dominant.
Unkowns
You don't know if they have damage mods or HP tanking.
You don't know their skill level.

Player Base
What are your skill levels relative to the player base? That is a huge contributor to the frequency of how much you win in 1 vs 1.
If you have equal skill to someone else, then you may lose 50% of the time. Losing a gunfight is okay, my friend. It happens to the best of us.
Find What Suits You
Find the fitting that makes you feel most comfortable, competent and somewhat in control.
Play with all of the militia gear. It's going to give you an idea of what direction you may want to develop in next.
Weigh your options. How many boosters are you trading off if you purchase a respec. I calculated that I could earn about 4+ million SP with boosters for about $20. I would say, never respec; always develop in a new branch while keeping the old skillsets. If you want to spend money, figure out the most efficient way to use boosters for your playing habits.

A skilled Assault will smash a proper Commando in 1v1. I can destroy any scrub Assault in 1v1 with my Commando as well, but an Assault who knows what he/she is doing will easily outdo a Commando.
Of course a skill difference will make up for the difference in 1v1 capabilities, so a skilled player like yourself would not notice the advantage an Assault has because you are superior no matter what suit you use.

Firstly, you're using a rail gun against an assault weapon.
The Rail Rifle has the lowest dps of any of the utility weapons. Against an assault rifle, you're currently better off using the assault rail rifle.
Unless you are at range, the kali rail rifle is automatically at a disadvantage.
A Calmando's bonuses are for ranged fighting, and Caldari suits are best suited for ranged fighting, fighting from cover, and hit and run tactics. They do not have the eHP for brawls.
If you destroyed his shield, and barely touched his armor then he was an armor suit. Either Amarr or Gallente. Since he was using an assault rifle, I can assume he's Gallente.
So via damage profile, you were engaging the correct target... Rail Rifles are anti-armor weapons; BUT so was he, because Assault Rifles are anti-shield weapons.
The two of you, successfully exploited each other's weaknesses. But he got the better on you, likely because you were exposed and/or fighting within his optimal range. If you shot at him from range and/or behind cover, you would have had a better shot at winning.
Set your goals high, and shoot for the moon; even if you miss you'll land amongst the stars.

I outdps people most of the time in 1v1 scenarios.
Then again, I am awesome.
CCP holds the Caldari's hand so this doesn't happen again.

i guess the range thing was a factor. we were shooting at 50-60meters. i just assume that from 100 meters down rail rifle will kick ass 1 vs 1 against assault suits and assaul rifle. |

In my opinion this is working as intended. I have proto Gal Commando and it is not supposed to be a frontline assault suit. Rather think of it as a support role, make sure to keep close to your team mates.
The commando vs assault:
- Big hitbox
- Slow
- Low ehp
- Low dps
- Low ewar
You will have to be really good and the assault really bad to win the encounter. The commandos only and primary strength is the dual light weapon use. Use weapons where you and your team benefits from this, take weapons into the match that would otherwise be left out.
My humble experience running proto gal commando with proto AR and PLC is that this is primarily a support, suppressing, and anti vehicle role. It is not a slayer. Assault has the ehp and dps and scout has the speed, ewar and flanking strength, commando has neither of these.
Commando alone is an easy target. A squad of commandos is scary, this is definitely a team role and not a lone wolf role. |

I've 1v1'd heavies with a friggin' laser rifle, bad players exist and you sound like one of them.
AR is hybrid weapon IIRC meaning it does equal damage to shields and armour, the AR fires very fast meaning
it suffers the least in laggy situations,
you said you got his shield down, you weren't doing a great deal of damage when shooting his shield and sometimes the RR hit detection is awful when it comes to taking down shields.
Do what I do, put 4 complex damage mods on ADV Cal assault with SB-39 rail rifle, if it's not laggy you will destroy everything, keep your distance and people will hide like little bitches.
