So this was originally posted here: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2525944#post2525944 But I think it deserves it's own thread so that maybe the devs will see the extra value of this one change an how it will affect gameplay in a positive way. And by that I mean, not an option solely to grief people by standing them somewhere in a red-zone, but to provide a better way to coordinate assaults on defended positions in the game.
Basically we NEED vehicle locks, and here is why:
- It will help to prevent people from stealing vehicles which is a big pain in the game right now. You earn all that ISK and then someone from your own team TK's you and runs off with your tank. Or worse yet someone accidentally kills you and then while you are respawning in, someone else thinks it's just an abandoned vehicle and takes it not knowing what they've done.
- Greifers, some passengers are only there to soak up kill assists and be AFK. Need a way to boot them out.
- Recalling, I just "landed" my dropship between two buildings and it's stuck sideways, but the blueberry won't get out so I can recall it.
- The current timer delays the start of match and is not conducive for cooperative play. Right now if you call in an LAV so you can try to grab the far away neutral objectives in a skirmish match, you CANNOT wait for passengers. The timeout is so long that the enemy will be there long before you will and so you leave to go there solo and the other blueberries think you are being a ****.
- Giving a squad-mate a ride. Right now if you already have a vehicle out and go to pick up a squadmate to take them to an important next objective, nothing stops a random blue berry from taking their seat and NOT giving it up. This really hurts coordinated squad level play.
- Not everyone on the team is using voice comms. So when they get on your dropship for a ride, they have no way to know when to jump out of it. This also hurts coordinated teamplay.
The solution to all of that and more is to add in vehicle locks. There would basically be four states:
00 - Enemy Vehicle - This means you cannot get in (if you are someone in it due to a glitch, it should boot you) and it should automatically give you the "Hold button to hack" option.
01 - Locked Owner Only - This means it is of the same team (cannot hack it) and if you are not the CURRENT owner of the vehicle, then you are automatically booted from the vehicle. (More on vehicle 'ownership' later.)
10 - Locked to Squad Only - This means it is of the same team (cannot hack it) and if you are not of the same squad as the CURRENT owner of the vehicle, then you are automatically booted from the vehicle.
11 - Unlocked - This means it is of the same team (cannot hack it) and anyone of the same team can enter the vehicle and TAKE OWNERSHIP OF IT.
Ownership - is based on who is currently sitting in the driver's seat or if no one is currently in the driver's seat, then whom ever was the last one to have occupied the driver's seat. The ownership field should only have to be updated for the vehicle object whenever someone enters the drivers seat. All vehicles should default ownership to the character that ordered the delivery of the vehicle and should also start off as Locked to Squad Only (10).
The access to the toggle the vehicle locking status should be able to gotten to WHILE PILOTING THE VEHICLE!!! (I'll explain why this is so damned important in a minute.) As I understand it now, the "X" button on the vehicle control map is not used (I could be wrong as I'm going off memory and if I'm wrong then use some other unused button for this). Make that button the "Vehicle Locks" button. Holding this button should pop up a round menu (kinda like the menu used for activating modules on a vehicle). There should only be THREE options on the menu. Forward should be LOCK VEHICLE TO SQUAD; Right should be LOCK VEHICLE (which will have a meaningful effect); and, left should be UNLOCK VEHICLE.
Now why have the vehicle lock be accessible during lets say when you are flying a dropship full of team-mates? Simple! Now when you fully load up a dropship with passengers you fly over the target area and then hold "X" while pushing the direction to the right and WALLA !!! You have deployed all passengers to the target at the same instant for a COORDINATED ASSAULT of the objective!!!! No more having to tell the players when to jump out, you can just lock the vehicle and they are automatically deployed where they are needed!!!!
But what about gunners? Well now you just get into your dropship and keep it locked to squad only. You wait for two gunners to take up the turrets on your dropship. Then you unlock your vehicle so anyone on the team can fill in the passenger slots. Once full you fly to the target, now once at the target you hit "X" and push the direction forward and walla, the vehicle becomes locked to squad only and the 4 passengers are deployed at the same time while your squad-mate gunners are still supplying suppressing fire for the 4 passengers that are now performing a coordinated assault on the objective!!!
Seriously CCP this is the kinda of simple logistical operational case usage thinking that I would have thought you guys could have figured out by now!!!
Someone please PLEASE take note of this so that we can get it done in the future. |

1. PS2 has it sorted
2. Locked - Squad lock - Unlocked
3. When its locked only you can get in, if squad locked your squad can get in, unlocked anyone can get in
4. If its unlocked and you have a non squad member in it, turning on squad lock will kick out the non squad member, if you lock it when a squad member is in the squad member gets kicked out
5. That is way to overcomplicated, you need a simple system like PS2 has done |

You may wanna be more specific here as in just because some other company was smart enough to implement it (I can also name several other games that do it right) doesn't mean an ENTIRE PLATFORM has it right. |

Bumping as I KNOW people want this and are just forgetting that if they don't hit the like button, start replying to the thread etc, then CCP ends up ignoring it.

+1 Bump Boost Like Thumbs up.
This has been needed for 2,5 YEARS now. The need is true. OP suggestion has good details how it could be done.
Rattati, show some mercy, give players vehicle locks!
People would enjoy Dust a lot more if they accepted the fact that EVERYTHING is subject to change

A solid proposal.
It is issue 4 that gets me. 15 seconds seems to take for bloody ever when you are trying to be nice and give a Blueberry a lift.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.

I totally agree. I've even been patient and waited the full 15 seconds in the past and this is what happens.
- I summon in a vehicle and have to wait for that... Hopefully someone is still around after it comes in, but most likely the blue berries just run off anyways on foot not being patient enough. And why should they as a scout can be sprinting to the first objective before my vehicle even hits the damned ground.
- Once the vehicle is down successfully, I get in it and wait...
- Blueberry sees me there waiting and comes up to the vehicle and is puzzled as to why he's not able to get into it. After all, he's probably new and doesn't know about the timer.
- Blueberry begins to think they are glitched and starts to shoot my vehicle, annoying the hell out of me.
- Blueberry gives up and thinks I'm lagged out or the problem is on my end and leaves.
- I end up having NO passengers and now I'm even so late to the start of the match that it was pointless to have ordered in my vehicle as it now is just an easy target for swarms, HAVs, and ADS to kill.
- End result - no profit. I just wasted all my ISK on deploying an LAV for no reason.
