Since the fix in 1.10 particle rendering, I have encountered the same amount of invisible swarms in all vehicles. About 3/4s of the swarms that are fired at me are invisible, and I've discovered its player specific.
Merc A will fire at me, and I can see his swarms traveling. Merc B and Merc C will have invisible swarms.
Also, I was in a tank with turrets the other day, and my top gunner was watching swarms traveling to hit us. After I traveled out of range, the swarms disappeared, as they should at the 400m mark.
However, about 1.5 seconds later We blew up to invisible swarms. The kill screen claimed I was blown up by swarms, 546m away. I took a picture of the screen, but my phone couldn't get a clear picture of the numbers.
I believe AV can't properly be balanced until it is working properly. We don't know if the weapons are being OP or UP if the pilot is unaware they are taking damage, and do not have information as to where the information is coming from.
I believe the theory to invisible swarms is linked to invisible (non rendered) character on the screen shooting. At 175m, most mercs aren't rendered on the screen. So an non rendered player shoots, it makes sense their swarms that were fired would not be rendered as well. As rendering in vehicles and camera distances in vehicles are very skewed.

Confirming this is still very true on this date.
Not as bad as one entire bogus build, but every tenth swarm turns invisible. Every twentieth is also soundless.
People would enjoy Dust a lot more if they accepted the fact that EVERYTHING is subject to change

I've been running derpships every day, and I can confirm that a large portion of swarms are invisible. Also, forge guns and rail turrets that are not rendered do not give any hit indications or collision. They just remove hp and can go completely un-noticed if you are distracted. |

The other factor I know is that the angle is important. Being higher or lower than the shooter means the length to determine if something is rendered shortens the ground distance dramatically. That old Pythagorean theorem at play.
Unfortunately I am not a developer. Although the problem has been very tenacious. Maybe a dev will look into it now that there is a known value to search for. Note that once something is not-rendered it is never rendered again. Which is definitely wrong. Once something gets within render distance it should be rendered.
You did save me the trouble of updating Dust514 though, I'll stick with From Software games and Planetside 2.
Keep posting! I need the information.
My favorite tank is a Lightning. Just sayin.

I realized something when someone was swarming an install in a game i was in recently. I went beside him, and the swarms rendered. Now, i went into the staircase (a wall between us now). I heard the swarms fire from the launcher; BUT, the rocket sound wasn't there. i stepped back out beside him after realizing he fired, no swarms rendered and the install's shields were shimmering and taking damage.
So what i learnt is this: -should you be facing the swarmer, swarms render. -should the swarmer fire around cover, one may experience ghost swarms. -if near by and you hear the missiles being released, the swarms have been fired, it is just not rendering. |

Personally, I say they cut back on the shiny things in the game and up the rendering distance for the field of vision. Honestly I prefer functionality over a game being "pretty"
