As the title says.
I'm looking to get a capture card for Christmas, and I am looking for recommendations. I am looking at the Elgato Game Capture HD as it isn't too expensive and has HD support, as well as streaming capabilities. Are there any better, or will that be as much bang as I'm going to get for my buck?
I would love to finally get in some of my PLC gameplay onto my record

Sorry for hijack. No, it captures TO the PC, so captured video goes to the PC.

Fraps can cause some frame rate reduction at high resolutions on a pc the age of mine..

I was looking at the Elgato not long ago but put off by several things (though to be honest it might be the case for all capture cards)
- looks like it needs to be connected to PC *whilst you play* - appears that it doesn't use HDMI for PS3 - component connectors instead
My PC is in a different room and I use HDMI connected to my TV for PS3. Whilst changing how I connect the PS3 might not have been a problem, needing a PC next to it is.
Be really great to get some peeps commenting in here who actually use one for DUST and explain the pros and cons.

I use the AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable (LGP). It's great and extremely easy to use. Just put an SD card in it and push the button to start recording, no PC needed. HD and all.
I also noticed a little thing that might have some significance, and it's that i've seen most of other people's videos on youtube not capturing the headshot "boom" sound correctly, like it oversaturates and actually silences everything instead. Mine doesn't have that problem and it sounds just fine. |

I Have the Elgato... The RoxioHD
And the Hauppage HD PVR.... By Far the Hauppage kicks the crap out of most of the competition. ---> here (Awesome for PC too)
Roxio has amazing video editing software that comes with though. But the hardware not so much. |

So Cards not setup with the Encryption data can't run HDMI off PS3. And the Hauppauge HD PVR.... By Far the Hauppauge kicks the crap out of most of the competition. ---> here (Awesome for PC too) Most Capture cards have a hard time getting game audio and live commentary.. This was built to deliver that. Roxio has amazing video editing software that comes with though. But the hardware not so much. All good capture cards require a computer these days... 30 mins of footage can eat up flash cards quick. Laptops or your DUST setup by the computer is your friend. There is huge advantages to having it setup and recording on your computer. Editing, Streaming.. a lot of things. OP - HDMI from the PS3 is blocked by HDCP.. There is only one on the market that bypasses it but I hear you need a pretty beefy computer to run it. Here is the linky https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/intensity/
BlackMagic Intensity card only works now if you are converting your HDMI to DVI signal before your computer as it strips the HDCP. To allow you to reccord from PS3, PS4 and Xbone.
Apparently there is a HDCP Stripper that all the You-tubers use and works with any card and is cheap compared to a HDMI to DVI splitter.. Read the reviews on it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0089DSLMY/#customerReviews

You'll have to use the component cables, the red, green and blue video cables in order to capture from the PS3. The HDMI output is encrypted or some BS like that, and apparently so that nobody has made a card to capture HDMI from the system.

I use the Roxio HD Pro. It does require an HDMI converter but the set up was still cheaper than an Elgato Pro when I bought it. Works decent enough for me. Can also be used to capture for the PC apparently though I have not tried it.

21 Bux and your good.
Be Warned. Sony has talked about a Future Update for the PS4 operating system that will Remove HDCP.. No Idea if Microsoft is mirroring this. |

Great! Lots of really good feedback, Bethy's helped a ton. I was looking at the Roxio one, and that one seems pretty decent and actually quite comparable to the Elgato. The fact that it also comes with editing software makes it even better, and PC capture is another plus.
Right now its close between those two. All the others seemed too expensive.
Given that I have a setup where I could have the PS3 running next to the computer, which capture card is the best then?

I Suggest You-tube it.
People will have unboxings.. Reviews, even show you the Roxio editing software... All kinds of stuff.. Best to make sure you make you own mind ultimately up about it through all the information as I'm sure you know. |

I have an Elgato, it's pretty good and does the job ok, the software it comes with supports streaming to twitch right off as well which can be nice.
The only downside I've noticed so far is that sometimes I have to restart the computer in order for it to be able to record the stream (but that may have to do with computer having been in sleep inbetween usage).

Sorry for hijack. If you wanted to record pc you would need a second comp to record to. For recording i have done on my pc, i use PlayClaw 5. However my computer also has a ton of harddrive space for the uncompressed AVIs. The most intensive recording i have done would have to be the BeamNG alpha.

Here is an advice from a YouTube like me.
Elgato is the best all around IF you have a pc close enough to your PC so you can hook it up.You should buy if you are interesting in live streaming an you have NO internet cap ! Livestreaming takes a lot of uploading internet in bandwidth.
Now you see I use a Avermedia Game Capture HD , wich is the only one to not need a pc to be hooked to record. You just plug in the USB and it record there !
Here is the newest verion of it : http://gamerzone.avermedia.com//game_capture/game_capture_hd_2
and the old version : http://avertv.avermedia.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=556
So yeah I really hope you get it because you'll probably integrate Youtube with us :D Feel free to ask me questions in game !

Actually, it looks like you can capture video from the PC through a capture device and save it on the same PC
kind of a convoluted setup though when you can do it in software |

ERM, k den.
You don't need one for PC, just buy some decent software.
K den broham/brosephine.
Do not try and bend the K den. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
There is no k den.

lol Sorry man.
I now have my eye on the Hauppaugge pvr that someone linked now. It will sit on the video out cable of either the pc or ps3 and then passthrough to the TV/Monitor and record to its own drive without causing lag (if used on PC) which fraps and other software solutions would do.
