Well I've barley spent any sp on my new toon (messed up my old) and I realy don't know what to invest in. I'm trying to go for support but not as squishy as a logi. Been playing around with forge gun,Plc and mass driver. Mass driver being most benificial. Using militia heavy gear. Like the shield a and up but hate getting left behind my squad.
How much does leveling weapon skills help damage wise? Like will the mass drivers actualy do some decent splash damage and how is the splash damage on forge guns when advanced? |

Proficiency Skills = 3% per level, the same as a Basic Damage Mod. Yes, it makes a difference.
Better than splash damage (which is great for those Kill Assists) is getting your aim true with the MD and landing it on them; sends bodies flying across the room. |

I would pick an Assault of some kind. They are in a good place now, and should be a good starter suit regardless.

1st things 1st.
Get all Dropsuit Upgrade skills to lvl3.
After that you'll have a chance to play with nearly all modules and begin to focus on what kind of suits and weapons you wanna play around with. |

Hello, GunsForGlory! And please be careful--don't make the mistake we see so many other players making in the game. UNLIKE the other fps games, there is NO connection between a 'support" role and the suite/ehp/weaponry that's best for you to Skill into. It sounds as though you are leaning towards becoming what the devs call an "Artificer". It's a player who shapes a customized role of her own (that doesn't fit neatly into the Medic, Fatty, AVer, Logi categories that Dust has formed),... and as a result is free to pick a weapon/vehicle/equipment combination that leaves the enemy stratching their heads.
As an Artificer, you eventually need to decide that "I will focus on only one or two jobs to support the squad, and I have decided NOT to waste SP trying to learn a third or fourth job". (For instance, as an Artificer I decided I will use a vehicle to transport and fire-support my fellow footmercs---and I WON'T try to provide support against enemy vehicles ). Weapon-skills are (deliberately) EXPENSIVE to use SP on, so please decide EARLY what support actions you WILL do for your squad, and what support actions will have to be done by someone else, NOT you.
A Forge Gun has zero (or almost zero) splash, no matter what adv/proto version. It was originally a mining tool, is good only against a big single target in clear straight open line of sight from you. While you're waiting around or walking around to get a clear chance to shoot a vehicle,... the squad you're trying to support leaves you behind, or gets decimated by gunmen your forge gun can't defend against. In my observations, forge gun carriers are hunters, not really "close" squad-supporters.
Want to stay WITH your squad and punch holes in enemy crowds that try to stop your squad from entering rooms/null points? Lob-weapons like Mass Driver, Grenades, and Nanohive are the 3 best weapons to build SP skills.
Want to be able to scare and hurt enemy footmen AND Lav/Dropships far enough away to soften a frontline area BEFORE your squad attacks, or cover your squad even from a safe distance behind your buddies? The Plcannon seems to be the versatile gun for that job---but like a Dropship, you must spend a TON of practice and SP with it before you're a proficient enough player to use it to help a squad.

Like will the mass drivers actualy do some decent splash damage and how is the splash damage on forge guns when advanced? the best days of the mass driver are long gone. the best days were when pro skill was 3% damage. not 3% to armor. i am lvl 5 min commando and pro 5 mass driver and the weapon is good at best. |

Based on your description of roles, I'd suggest this:
Scout suit: helps you get above and around the enemy Mass driver: can terrorize and bombard enemies Sidearm: take what you like Modules: shield and dampener, or armor and range enhancer Equipment: uplink and repair tool
This suit should take high value ground and help launch an assault from high ground.

There is no such thing as a wasted toon. spec into what you like and branch out to new stuff as you get board or frustrated. 50m sp here and every so often I need to put down the maxed CR and kill some fools with my plasma cannon.
I know it's a pain but focus of maxing out your core skills ( damage mods, armor/shield, reps/ regen, fitting ect). prof III is usually more than enough for any weapon I can think of to keep your head above water in pubs. as a young toon you want to focus on putting as much SP into each suit as you can.
If you really like the Mass Driver then you'll enjoy the min mando. just remember it puts the "ass" in glass cannon.
Thr33 is the magic number.

I would say the minassault is a really nice suit to skill into. It also gives you a start towards the minlogi if you like supporting your team. The assault combat rifle is deadly in the hands of either. But like many said before core skills max and modules lvl 3 is important to fit any suit properly. I've never run the basis min frames maybe the're an ok basis to start from. Good luck. |

Definitely skill into Dropsuit Upgrades Core Skills first. I know it's exciting to jump at the chance of a new weapon and shiny suit but it's a good way to lose a lot of good money pretty quickly.
The core skills that matter:
Dropsuit Upgrades -> Armor: +5% base armor per level Dropsuit Upgrades -> Shield: +5% base shield per level Dropsuit Upgrades -> Core -> Electronics: + 5% base CPU Dropsuit Upgrades -> Core -> Engineering: + 5% base PG
Those are the first most important to focus on as it at max, it gives you 25% more armor and shields to the base stats of any suit. So if you skilled into these first, you're already at an advantage from your base newberries starting out even in your starter fit.
Electronics and Engineering is expensive, but getting even to lvl 3 is going to be a huge benefit. There is nothing worse than having an ADV suit and having skilled into ADV modules but not being able to fit them due to PG/CPU restrictions. You're going to run into this problem even more on proto suits if you ignore those two core skills.
Once you go beyond, really it's going to take playing around with some suits to see. I would recommend running in some militia suits of a variety before moving on. Militia Commando is the best for the Mass Driver due to the 'explosives' bonus, however you might find the Commando very cumbersome. I only use it for my AV fit and really don't prefer it for my go to fit. You may fare differently.
Trying out the different suit weights (light, medium, heavy) might give you a much better idea of movement which is of vital importance in battle. Being a slow moving behemoth that can take the heat or the fast twitching scout. AND being able to keep putting down fire accurately while doing that movement and surviving the encounter.
EDIT: Also, be sure to clarify how you mean 'support'. In this game, people immediately assume you mean 'Logi' and might steer you completely wrong if you really mean 'area denial' type squadmate.
