Friendly Local Chat scrub here with a few questions...
So I first noticed this while I was watching a few youtuber's videos of Dust Gameplay.
I've been playing for around 8 weeks daily (grinding those WP's to get my cores up to snuff) and feel as though I have a good feel for the performance of my set up.
I use to be an avid PS3 player years ago before I drifted away. Once my friend introduced me to dust I had to go out and buy a PS3. It was as if I didn't even have a choice. Im sure you guys know how that feels.
However I've come to a turning point.
I am dealing with some... Lag isn't the right word... but PS3 performance problems... "Framerate" problems which Leads to Hit dection problems... Maybe?...
Problem:
The easiest way to explain this is that 99/100 times when my clone goes down it shows 0 health before it shoes my shields and armor depleting. Every time. With the exception of... like... being picked off at a distance by a low powered weapon. My framerate appears to never be anything close to the gameplay in this video.
(I know there are many other variables involved with capturing video of gameplay that could play into how the youtube video shows the game. But I feel as though what the video shows is how the game should actually run.)
This results in endless firefights leaving me to feel like im at a huge disadvantage. (Cause you know... Being new isn't hard enough )
Anyways...2 days ago I finally decided to look into things and get this figured out. And here's what I got:
Yes, first I changed the texture settings and what not to LOW in game, showed no change.
DMZ: I configured a DMZ to try and ensure connectivity. I have never really had problems getting disconnected from the server and what not. But I tried this anyways. Successfully established with my router and PS3 with internet connection and Dust connection. Ended with no effect on gameplay.
Input lag: I looked into my TV's settings to ensure it wasn't to blame. I found that Game Mode was NOT on. Created a custom display and turned everything extra off. Smoothing, Movie mode, All that jazz. Ended with improved visuals (colors and sharpness) but NO effect on "framerate"/problems mentioned earlier.
PS3 Ventilation: Seems to be all good. I have the newest 12GB PS3. System doesn't seem to overheat. Dust performance remains consistent for hours with no changes for better or worse. (I do power down and let it rest every few hours)
I realized today that it have 12GB flash (I think that's correct?) memory. Could this have an impact on game performances? A quick google search shows problems with this model PS3 and game lag. Dust is the only thing on my PS3 so there is still a ton of memory left over. And I remember reading a post from someone talking about SSD's effecting the actual gameplay...
Finally I tried the end all. I switch to 480p on my ps3's display settings. (using standard HDMI) I think this showed actual improvement of the game. Am I making this up in my head? Am I going crazy or would the PS3 perhaps have to work... "less hard" to display 480P thusly leaving more computing for Dust to use? What do you guys think? "Framerate" is definitely better however I still think it falls just short of the video I referenced earlier.
Internet connection has shown NO problems in any other capacity. Other online games (2 PS3s in the house) Run perfectly fine. We can stream netflix while 2 people surf the internet and play Dust at the same time and the Dust gameplay stays consistent.
I'm really hoping there IS something off with my set up because this gameplay is really testing my patience.
So how does it run for you guys? Does it look similar to the gameplay in the video? If it does...
What is your set up? Which PS3 model are you using? Internet set up?
If it is my PS3, I would be totally willing to sell this one and purchase a different model. Would love some community feedback before I make that decision though. Is there one model that performs better than others with dust?
I've done many other little things like disabled the media server for the PS3 and and deleted and re-downloaded dust but it's late and kind of hard for me to remember everything I've tried to fix this. None of them have had a big impact.
Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you for reading.
EDIT: Holy crap thats a long post. Apologies. |

Try running at 480p and see if the frame rate drops go away.
It will look ugly but should run smooth.
If that improves it...
It might be worth using Component cables instead of the HDMI cable for DUST, if you still desire HD gaming from DUST. Many play 480p because of DUST's poor game performance.
Any other frame rate loss is usually game side. DUST has very inconsistent frame rate.
If all you do is play DUST then it isn't that bad... But going from other games to DUST it nearly gives you a headache. |

I had hit detection issues also, and dying after I took cover. As if I received Death amount of damage but didn't register till a molment later. I made all the fine tuneing adjustments mentioned above, also port forwarding. It got a bit better, but after this update I feel as if I'm back to square one . Lag and hit detection are horrible . I wish ccp would try to improve this issue . Just an idea but making a better running game may attract more players thus making more money , than spending all your time and resources playing off ego (rank display) , impatience , curiosity (box n key) aurum spending , money generating techniques. Milking who is left rather than attracting more.

- Clean your ps3 insides from dust (no pun intended). - Re-apply thermal paste. - Keep PS3 in a well ventilated area, in a horizontal position (lieing down). - Play in 576p/480p resolution.

I shouldn't be having to do this for a damn console lol.
I can understand modifying my PC to get things working but isn't a console supposed to be the dumb down version of a PC? Pick up and play.. not Modify to play?...
Goes back to developer failing to do their part.
Thank god for CCP Rattati!!
