TL:DR; Adding some rogue-like features to DUST would be relatively easy to accomplish and would give the game a powerful USP.
I want to discuss these ideas in the order I think it would be possible to add them.
1. PVE
Putting some kind of drones in has been in the pipeline for a while. They don't have to be amazing, they could just use the current suits and vehicles but with AI controlling them. This is probably the hardest thing to implement.
2. Hives / Dungeons / Networks.
So once you can have a match vs AI drones then you create a network of interlinked matches. Here is a map from the game FTL showing what I mean.
When you have killed all the drones in one area you can then move on to the next one. It would be nice to make stargates or something like that for this but it could just be done via dialog box at first.
So the Hives are procedurally generated and infinitely big. When you start a Hive campaign your team selects what equipment to take with them (suits, weapons, vehicles etc) and they cannot resupply while in the hive. They fight in match after match until they run out of resources then they they are returned to their quarters. You get loot for each match you win.
When you are in a node on the map and you have some choices about which node to go to next then you are given some information about these nodes. So some will says "Enemies: Many, Loot: None" and you won't want to go there. But others will say "Enemies : Few, Loot : Vast" and you will want to work towards these nodes. You may want to fight through a couple of hard ones to get to one with massive loot. Sometimes it will be worth fighting through a hard match to avoid going a long route around it.
3. Bosses
Make some giant machines which act as bosses as different parts of the Hive. They should guard choke points and they should give a lot of loot and be hard to defeat.
4. EVE link.
The hives should be on planets. So when I start a new hive there should be 10 or so nodes on the first planet. I can ask an EVE player to come and offer orbital bombardment support while we are on this planet clearing these 10 nodes. Then maybe there is a boss guarding a much bigger interplanetary stargate.
Once we beat the boss and go through the gate we go to a new planet, somewhere else in the galaxy (maybe within 5 jumps). This new planet has 10 more nodes. Maybe when you go through the boss big stargate there are several choices of new planets to head to.
The EVE player then has to fly through the EVE galaxy to position above the new planet we are working through to provide orbital support.
The Hives should start in Highsec but slowly move out towards Lowsec and then out into Null. So as the Hive is getting harder and we are going deeper into it the EVE player needs to take more risks going to more dangerous space to support us.
5. Pirates
So when this is established other teams of players can log in a pirates. They wait in a queue and then (mechanics undecided) they can break into the Hive my team is clearing. This means they can attack us in a normal DUST match (Maybe they come in at a random place and have to fight through some drones to get to us).
For every kill of my team they get the pirates get some small amount of the loot we have collected thus far in the hive. So it's a great proposition to be a pirate. Of course if they land far away from my team in the hive and have to fight drones to get to us then the loot from those drones accrues to me so they are wasting their time.
You could set it up so the two teams can't see where the other is. This way being a pirate is about waiting at a chokepoint or moving around hunting the team which is clearing the Hive. They could track them by finding cleared nodes and then trying to follow the path. There could be clues as to where people are as orbital bombardment could be a flash on your map.
6. Expanding the EVE link with more Loot
So I have suggested this before but I think when a ship dies in EVE there should be some percentage chance that it should crash land on a planet and get entered into a hive.
Then when I am exploring the Hive I come across a downed rifter and, if we fight off the drones, we can salvage some EVE parts from this downed ship (subject to the good graces of the loot fairy of course). We can then launch these pieces into orbit from the planet for an EVE player to collect (using the mechanics for orbital launches from PI).
But this means we have to trust the EVE player who has collected the loot for us. So my team is working through the nodes of a hive and an EVE player is in orbit helping with orbital bombardment and another is collecting the loot from the downed ships we have launched into orbit. They could just take the loot and screw us when the hive is over (we still get our DUST loot but they can just take the loot we have launched). This is classic EVE trust building which is an important part of the game.
When a titan dies and it crashes to a planet many teams will want to search Hives to see if they can find it. After a massive battle the system will be flooded by DUST mercs spawning Hives to try to get to some of these crashed Titans hoping to recover pieces from them. But when they are holding a site against drone attack and a re ready to launch the titan pieces some plucky EVE player needs to be waiting in a hauler. This could spawn some good EVE content.

PVE and EVE link? Those are exactly what will change this game from mediocre lobby shooter to a great game. PVE alone: I just don't want to PvP 24/7 against douchebag protostompers, sometimes I want to just chill out and shoot **** with mates.

Actually a great idea. If you allow, I'd add one more cent or two, as I did in my post over a year ago :
- retractable doors to keep npcs or other, competing teams out or in. -Missions as only squad sized matches (squad vs. squad vs. npc), - hard to breach objectives or structures to enter (massive RE necessary), - loot with meaning- make it part of suit and weapon manufacturing process such as hybrid (pirate faction) suits, equipment, etc... - personal pet drones (built with loot/salvage) with different purposes (i.e. scan drones), controlled via squad command wheel like mechanics - mercenary quarters pimpin' (place me dat cereals an' quafe I jus' found on that godforsaken planet)

Was pleasantly surprised.
EVE Online is what you get when engineers attempt to create "fun" without consulting someone who comprehends the word.
