Protofits is fine for me, just used it to have a look at some of the APEX suits. No lag no waiting, worked fine for me.

A lot of the APEX fits I have looked up on there linked directly from the CCP google spreadsheet differ from the spreadsheet which differs from the actual fit.
I wish CCP would at least update the spreadsheet but I don't trust protofits on this.
And yes it can be slow lately. Unusable even.

I preferred the old UI, as it looked nicer and loaded much faster.
