I thought I'd use some of the SP I had saved up to give the combat rifle a shot. Can't figure it out.
The regular combat rifle shreds armor but is really weak against shields. So I equipped to flux grenades and an ion pistol. But then the combat rifle is good at range and the ion pistol is really hard to use at a distance. Same goes with the scrambler pistol.
So I tried the assault combat rifle. When I try closing distance so I'm closer it's definitely better but having to switch from a side arm or grenade to my primary weapon is a serious problem. The TTK still seems crazy long.
I don't have these kind of issues with the AR and the rail rifle. Please tell me I'm missing something obvious lol. I also have a fair amount of SP in my mimatar commando suit so maybe that's the solution. Anyone know how to use one effectively? |

This is correct, always tenderize your shield based opponents with a flux first. It is the only whey.
Any sidearm that you are comfortable with will do. If you need range, go with the MLT BP: cheap and effective if you can master it.

Being effective with a Combat Rifle takes quite a bit of time, as you have to get used to the RoF. My advice would be to go by a Supply Depot and keep firing it until you get the groove down.
The ACR isn't as great as the CR because the ACR has the same RoF, but reduced range & damage. Once you master the Burst CR I guarantee that you'll do far better with it.
As for good fittings, I see you have an Ion Pistol which works great with the CR (I use the CR/IoP combo all the time). But I'm not sure what fits you have (other than Minmatar Commandos) so I'll leave you with this.

Use the natural variant, and if you insist on using the Ion Pistol, charge it and make sure you don't miss when you're both close to each other. Thanks to the short seize, you can switch to your CR when it goes down quickly.
Or cook your fluxes. |

For combat rifles, you'll want/need to either A: Use it in Ion Pistol range, or B use it with damage mods.
With damage mods you can use 2 complex to bring it's to-shield efficiency to about 96-98% Then, that'll buff your anti-armor to about 125-129%, making it the explosive rifle.
Or, go Commando and have a enhanced damage mod to bring it as close as possible to 100/130, which is insanely awesome.
In terms of long range shield popper sidearms, Bolt Pistol is pretty nice(OP), as well as a Scrambler Pistol(not so long range) in the end though, rely on your primary as...well a primary, and not a "finisher" type.

Bolt Pistol is better against armour, but it's that OP that it doesn't really matter.
Personally I would go with the ScP if you find the IP too short range. If you're a good shot or have the element of surprise, breach will mess them up in one or two shots.
Atm I'm running IP / NK as a min scout - and the charged IP shot OHKs a *lot* of suits...but a miss often brings death at ~300 HP

Awesome. Going to try out a few of these. Part of it will definately be practice but I think damage mods, using a side arm I'm already used to or trying out some of the other ones listed should help. I hope anyway lol. |

I use a Six Kin on my little proto Calscout, so what? I'll strafe every now and then, but that tactics, you know called "F*ck this I'm not losing this suit, cost me 700k!" or "Nope, I don't want to get shot." or "Staying alive"

I specifically run the advanced combat rifle on my basic/blueprint gallente scout because creeping up & attacking is the best strategy in my opinion when using them together. Just b sure to use a few armour mods & either a scan enhancer or damage mod for the high slot. Ive taken down alot of heavies with this fit, however, not head on.
