So I missed out on Chromosome and see a lot of references to it praising it. What were the bad things that brought about the game that we play now?

During chromosome, you could do 360 spins with the laser rifle firing and you would kill almost everyone on the enemy team.

Exaggerating, but the Laser Rifle was the go to weapon.

It had some good things and some bad things to it.

Pros: The skill tree was longer and more comprehensive, Vehicle/AV balance was way better, heavies were balanced with assaults and TTK was quite a bit up. Corp battles were a lot better than the current PC system and faction warfare, while annoying actually was rewarding from a factional basis.

Cons: It was buggy as ****, filled to the brim with lag and was graphically unimpressive. Also a good number of weapons were OP, including assault rifle and HMG, while others didn't work at all, like shotgun.

I think the real reason people look back so fondly on Chrom is that it was the last time people could look at dust and get excited. It was about to be released and they knew big things were on the horizon. It was the last time people could say "it's a beta, it will get fixed on release." Uprising was a huge **** up that the game took a full six months to recover from. At that point everyone but its die hard fans had abandoned it.

 Honestly, DUST peaked there.
The most memorable moments, the most fun battles, the biggest corp drama, all of that came from that era for me.

As a note of something I miss, back in the day not everyone ran proto 24/7.
Someone bringing proto means that **** just got real, and everyone jumped on the train to escalate the battle.

That's whats up. It had something right but compared to right now it was a buggy alpha build pretty much.

Not saying what we have now is perfect but it is a lot better than chrome.

But none of that stuff is really chrome gameplay focused it is dust vision focused. If you told someone this is the way dust will always be they would quit very soon. People were playing in chrome because they had a future to look for that's why i played in chrome. Because while i had fun with friends i knew this game would improve and have more stuff added to it. It was not static it was ever change and growing that is why i was drawn to dust. It was because of the vision not because of the chrome gameplay.

I should also add that the corp landscape felt a lot more dynamic and exciting back in chrome as well. Nowadays you have almost no chance of starting a corp out of nothing; all the major corps now have either been around for sometime (KEQ, Molon), piggybacked off of the success of another corp they were in an alliance with (Cap Acq, GAM, random guns) or be the reformed version of a dead corp (Fatal, Murphy's, Bloodline). Since there was no inherent hierarchy of corps based on who held the most districts, there was a greater sense that anyone could beat anyone. There were a lot of massive upsets with previously unknown corps suddenly putting their name on the map by winning a bout with a larger more well known corp. Nowadays people join corps not even because they want to win, but because they want the status that comes with being in a top tier corp.

My favourite memories come from Chrome... I happened to be that 1 guy in the match who was #1 and went full proto.
Didn't understand a lot back then, now I do... but still Chrome was the best to me
well except for the 'Invalid fit' glitch...
I've never had lag in DUST until 1.9, same with never frozen until 1.8 so I don't know if that's true or not. I hear people b*tch about how useless it was then and call me a newb... I then turn around and 99% the time I've been here longer.

Anyway it had features that need to be in the game. Was very fun for me and I managed to be a Sniper back then.

I think it was around 1.8c that people finally started to agree that DUST hand finally surpassed where it was in Chromosome. It had become fun again. Of course considering that we look at Chromosome through the rosy complexion of hindsight, in actuality DUST probably surpassed Chromosome somewhere between 1.8 and 1.8b.

I think everyone would agree that 1.7 was the low point of DUST, and we were stuck with that build for months.

The only really positive memory I have of chromosome is when someone had called in their Saggaris just as me and a random blueberry got in my LAV. I rushed to where the Marauder was being dropped and managed to flatten the heavy that owned it. I got out and, surprisingly, no one else noticed/cared enough to stop me from hacking the tank. Long story short, I won the game for my team. The tank blew up though, so there went 1mil+ isk.

There are a couple of cool things I could say about Chromosome.

-Lasers were OP as hell but looked epic in massive line battles on Manus.
-Tanks were ******* hard to kill but rewarding as hell to do (I didn't tank back then)
-Everyone used Assault rifles an in its own way it was balanced (apart from sharpshooter)
 -Lots of variant dropsuits
 -Vehicle MODULES!
 -Corp Battles!

Escalation was the best bit of Chromosome. There was a better frame of mind back then.

Basically everyone would spawn in moderate gear but someone would have to be douchey enough to drop a proto suit or weapon. Then came the Soma and Sica to counter that ass, then came the AV, the dropships, the Madrugar and Gunnlogi, then eventually the Sagaris and the Surya. Then everything would dissolve into a chaos of "KILL THAT MARAUDER!"

I said, "Empress, I do this, I thought that you knew this.

Why people like chrome? That's when most the top players played. If you didn't play then, well you missed out on the best competition in the game. People can say what they want about chrome being bad but it had the best players therefor it was my favorite build, competition = fun
