Would love comments either in this thread or directly on the document. Please be constructive and don't blow a gasket if you disagree with me. Instead present your point of disagreement so we can discuss it .
INTRODUCTION First of all, forget everything you know about weapon variants in Dust, leave words like GÇ£assaultGÇ¥ and GÇ£breachGÇ¥ at the door because while this concept is similar in many ways to what we have now, it has fundamental differences that may be overlooked if your mind is clouded with preconceptions and hung up on naming conventions.
Weapon variants in Dust are for all intensive purposes broken and need to be reworked on a fundamental level. In this design we will take a look at 4 Firetypes, each designed to behave and operate in different situations and ranges. We will also look into options to set both effective maximum ranges as well as minimum ranges for each type such that long range weapons are not being used in short range. Finally we will explore weapon variants, specifically for Rifles to begin with, in order to bring more diversity to combat without excessive SP investment in order to do so.

This is nice.
CQC, med and long range variants should exist for all rifles for NPE and also for variety. Every rifle type should havet comparable performance to other racial types of that weapon. You should just need to spec into the rifle you think is the coolest and stick with it!
Variants available at standard level.
EVE: Legion, also known as: Schroedinger's Game, EVE: Limbo, or just "Not-a-game-yet".

+1 for realizing that "Breach" or "Firetype 1" is essentially a slow Assault Variant, and not the long range variant everyone seems to think it is.
I mean, sure, it works better at a comparatively extended range due to lower RoF and better overall handling, but that doesn't make it the long range variant... Semiautomatics should always have the longest range in their group.
Please, make my Opus pretty...

My biggest issue with Breach variants we have now is that they're stable and slow fire rate, so they're good at range, but also have insanely good hipfire, so they're also fantastic at close range. I think in general the very stable, heavy hitting shots of the Type A is great for a 'standard' rifle, kind of as the baseline, medium range, general purpose rifle. However the badass hipfire needs to belong to a closer range variant that's designed for CQC, so thats why it's on the Type B.
I think the terms "Breach" and "Assault" have inherient meaning which makes people assume the weapons *should* perform in a certain fashion. Can't tell you how many people say "Oh, its 'Breach' so its close range only!" which is exactly why I purged all mention of existing terms from the document and went with generic naming schemes.
