Shield Variations of Vehicles are statistically superior at the moment.
Firstly the currently suffer no mobility penalties for stacking their racial tank (aka Shields) and have very respectable passive regeneration in a way armour simply does not without even having to fit a module.
Secondly they have access to PG and CPU extenders without having to sacrifice Racial Tank.
Thirdly Shields have better Crisis Control Modules with access to Small Shield Boosters [+950 Shielding] instantly upon activation and Shield Hardeners [40% Shield Resistance Modifier] and a passive 20% resistance against most AV options [kinetic - Forge Guns, Large Rail guns Explosive - Swarm Launcher, AV Grenades, Large Missile Turrets].
Though that is only statistically speaking. Actually pilots should be able to enlighten you to their opinions.
However.......
HARD FACTS
Python
1x Advanced Heavy Shield Extender [+1007 Shielding] 1x Complex Shield Hardener [40% shield resistance modifier] 1x Complex Afterburner [ 150% Airspeed Modifier]
1x Complex PG Extension Unit [+20% PG]
1x XT-1 Missile Launcher
Shield HP: 2555 Shield EHP: 3577 (*1.2 = 3579) Total HP (unmodified): 4537
You could even sub out the AB for a Shield Booster if you felt comfortable getting into the habit of Booster, Hardener, Escape as that 950 HP is instantly repped and then protected by your 40% modifier ( effectually 1330 Shield HP)

Shield variations are only useful when fitted properly to fight against infantry and ground vehicles. Armor dropships are going to be the end all solution to other dropships and HAV's. True Adamance's fitting above is nice, but in my experience adding a light shield extender works much better due to the long down time and unknown possibilities that can happen once your hardener is down. Best to you on the flying!

everyone will sit here an tell you caldari but then you have multiple threads of caldari pilots asking for buffs.. if you wanna fumble thru actives and be destroyed by minor collisions, fly caldari..
doesnt matter what choice tho when you meet up with a minmando damaging modding proto SL you will go down.. currently swarms will find you there is no evading them and there is no taking cover they will clip thru all terrain and obstacles, making 180 degree turns.. 2 volleys from a minmando will destroy anything you have fit.

Ngl you die in just over 3 volleys to a wirykomi swarm launcher no matter what fit you run. The problem against coordinated av is 1 forge and 3 seconds of swarm firing will guarantee down your ship So pick both, you don't need the sp into specialised bonuses now that ccp nerfed them anyway

Missile launcher is the best turret for both Python and Incubus, the python has a very nice bonus to it which the incubus dosnt get.
However the incubus is generally able to fit a better tank for the loss of the RoF bonus the python gets.
I think python with a pro launcher is deadly in the right hands, very experienced pilots will completely destroy infantry and vehicles alike.
But I think for more casual and slightly safer play the incubus would be better.

Quit telling people ADS is broken and that it sucks please? As long as you hit the AB when you get hit, you will survive if you time it right. My fit that works for pretty much everything:
Python
ADV Heavy shield extender Complex Light Booster Complex Afterburner
PG extender of some sort, depends on skills.
XT-1 Missile Launcher
With this fit, you will never die to a solo AV'er. Ever. When you get hit, activate AB. After the second hit, throw on the booster. The third hit will be the last one(if it even connects) then your out of range. now you wait a total of 30 seconds to let the modules recharge and voila. Kill stuff.
Dedicated Shield Tanking vet since Open Beta.
Up and coming Python pilot.
The awnser is always XT missiles....
