You don't know what you are getting into?
Well it happens to most of us where we dont want to spec into a weapon because even when we try them at militia, thay stand as a poor representation of what these weapons can actually do. So alleviate the stress of some of you deciding to whether or not spec into it I did a spreadsheet that will be follow by a video in about two days showing you the maximum power a plasma canon can wield in a controlled environment.
Enough of the talking and here is the spreadsheet depicting The capability of damage using a commando suit at level 5 or using a standard suit with no bonuses towards the Plasma cannon. Included is also max ammo possibly achieved and last but not least fitting requirements for the average merc or someone who specced into level 5 gallente assault suit. Please remember that these are max numbers since I didnt want to waste time in doing more numbers than I had to.

I have never had as much fun in DUST as when I ran dual plasma cannons on a commando.
Also, the officer plasma cannon is incredibly satisfying to use. Heavy spam? Nail those fools with uberkaboom plasma everywhere.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.

Good information, OP. I've spent quite a bit of time running the PLC with various fittings, and so far the best combination for me seems to be a Cal assault PLC/Flaylock combo. It's reasonably fast, the shield buffer lets me hit and run without blowing myself up on point blank shots, and good god is it fun. I still have a Gal commando PLC fit as well, and even experimented with putting one on a Gal scout for a few weeks, but I keep coming back to this assault fit. It really has a nice blend of survivability and speed, and is great for laughs.

This is very true, but something about the shield tanked Cal suit just fits the way I use it better. I very seldom find myself using this fit in sustained fire fights where armor tanking/armor rep tanking really shines. I try to blap and bail. Also, the explosive tendency of this fit means I do my best to keep costs down, which translates into nearly all adv gear instead of proto.

The plasma cannon is a beast of a weapon to use. It is also one of the weapons that benefits most from SP and skills sunk into it.

The controlled environment was to test out damage output not battle conditions. It lets player know what to expect when fighting shield tank. The tank demonstrayed was overtanked with 5300 shield a hardner and a plate to demosnstrat how many shots it would take to crach a tough nut

I don't know what exactly got me into the Plasma Cannon about a month ago...
Wait a minute, I'm remembering now.
T'was a day that was near ending,
And I felt something was missing,
So in an effort to make the most of it,
I went ahead and bought a fit;
The Quafe Amarr Assault.
I then went ahead and created,
What every sane mercenary berated,
I made an uneconomical abomination,
Which I sported in Domination,
A PLC and Flaylock fit.
As I went through the match,
I found that fun had met its match,
Seeing heavies fly,
And scouts die,
I discovered my new favorite.

Well guys my computer just had a major seizure sorts. I had to install ubuntu to take care of one of the drives that was not letting it start. Hopefully ill get the video done soon, sorry about the setbacks
