I've seen a lot of confusion, ignorance, and anger about how our "weapons in the future have less range than our weapons", and I would like to explain that this is simply not true. The weapons that we are using would kill at thousands of meters without problem. Its the dropsuits that make that not happen. Even a Gallente AR or an Ion Pistol would have an effective kill range of several hundred meters. The Laser Weapons in particular would be able to kill at ungodly ranges, but that's directed energy weapons for you. Dropsuits are batshit crazy. It would kill a person to even put one on. Luckily we don't have to worry about our bodies being infomorphic mercenaries and all...
You may be asking yourself " How do Dropsuits reduce the effective range of a weapon? This Fizzer guy must be off his rocker!" The answer is hardening.
You see, every dropsuit has a very powerful and accurate sensor array. This array is not meant to detect enemies however, but projectiles. It detects a bullet, slug, or plasma bolt in midair. Mere microseconds after it leaves the barrel of the weapon. The dropsuit takes this information and calculates the trajectory and speed of the projectile. If the bullet is going to hit the dropsuit, it hardens the point of impact. Hardening does take time however, and if the weapon is too close to the dropsuit, the suit doesn't have enough time to harden before it gets hit. But if the weapon is too far away, like say a Combat Rifle at 100m, the suit has enough time to partially harden its armor or shields before the round impacts, reducing the damage taken.
Basically, the range of our weapons is not dictated by the weapons, but by how close they have to be to get past the hardeners.
Except Laser weapons. They're different. Their range is determined by their focusing. Lasers are highly inefficient, and don't actually output that much damage. Lasers have to be focused at a certain range to do any real damage to a dropsuit.
They, ironically, rely on brute force to bypass a dropsuit's hardening system.

It makes a hell of a lot more sense to say, "suits are dampened to counter these sensors" than it does to say" the bullet magically dissapears at 250m...
