It's been like a whole year and I still haven't gotten much better at this game. I still can't keep my aim on rabbit-uh I mean, other players, my shields and armour miraculously vanish while I'm fighting -one- guy (using weapons either I myself have used or am using.but are using them.. better than me? LOL) and I just can't seem to catch a break. I often find myself in a hopeless situation being over-run and swarmed by a bunch of a**hats just throwing all of their clips at me like they were booing me off stage.
I've accumulated over 14million SP and have some fairly decent and high skills, but that's the only type of skill that's gone up. I just cannot grasp this game and it's frustrating the everlasting sanity out of me. I don't mean to sound like I should be good but I'm just going to say this, Dust is literally the -only- FPS/Shooter in general that I'm bad at. CoD, BF, Transformers, Uncharted, Destiny, you name it I'm probably pretty decent at it. Or at least can hold my own. But Dust throws me right off.
Do I just have the wrong type of equipment or what? I mean saying that, I have the SB Rail Rifle and I do okay whenever I can hit my enemies (I quite literally have issues staying on target and keeping track of their movements) but this one guy came into numerous Ambush lobbies and just dominated players left and right. I didn't really get a good look at his suit and even if I did, I haven't actually been playing long enough or cared hard enough to remember the suits names, I remember the weapons though because you do after a while of them just handing you sweet defeat day after day.
I also want to say that personally, I don't want to join a corporation. I know, oh but you'll team up with pros and get good! That's if they're "I just woke up and hit the bong" voice doesn't depress me first. There's a difference between sounding laid back and just sounding miserable and it bores the game even more for me, plus a lot of the players I've seen seem to lack all sort of leadership skills, they can't even authorotize themselves lol
Just some thoughts. Quite frankly I'm surprised I came back to this game, I was interested to see if it had changed but it didn't. Not significantly, anyway.
Oh and I went back and read a few old forums with people bitching about gameplay and what have you and others responding with "it's a beta". Well it ain't no beta anymore is it!? I feel like the game just turned out progressively worse, I kinda wish I was here from the beginning, to see what the very first and original style of Dust 514 was. Honestly I don't know why but I preferred the ironsights of the AR's then.
Also does no one else think we should get to choose if our gun has a sight or whatever? That may just sound like me being CoD/BF reminiscing but I can't really think of an FPS where you couldn't really change the guns look and optimization. |

You definitely need a corp, may I suggest Immortal Guides. Staying in a squad should work out for you, so why not hit up the Learning Coalition in the chat channels.

What I did was make an alt, and play for a few months using only the frontline fit. Meanwhile, while I was playing, my main, (this) sat around getting SP. By the time I felt confident about my abilities and found my playstyle, I had a good amount of ISK and alot of SP. Also, it helped me improve my gun game, my aim is way better now.

1) Make sure you have some skill points in the weapons to decrease dispersion. I found that particularly helpful on my CR.
2) Switch to Mass Drivers, PLCs and Knives. The splash damage with the first two help reduce the aiming problems, and knives are a whole different kind of aiming.
3) Adjust your sensitivities. If you are too all over the place, tone them down.
Hope at least some of that helps.

The control is DUST is stiff. I would suggest increasing the sensitivity of your gamepad to compensate for this. As high as you can while still being able to do fine controls is the best idea. Also be sure that Aim Assist is on. It is REALLY minor in DUST but any little bit helps.
For gun game, it might just come down to picking bad targets. Try flanking the enemy so they don't know where you are. People die fairly fast in DUST when they get focused on. Running as a Scout with a Cloak can teach you how to get used to this kind of play. Sneak behind the enemies and fire off Rail Rifle shots from their flank or even go Shotgun to make everyone hate you. For the flank bit rather than "I appear behind you and blap!", you are looking at choosing your fights correctly. A Sentinel out in the open with an HMG is dog food if there is a Rail Rifle at 40 meters.
Happened just yesterday. I had like 100 armor left after killing another enemy and this Sentinel was waddling way down the road shooting me. Maybe took 20 damage from his spray before he dropped to my Rail. Put that fight at 15 meters, I would have been dead before the charge up.
You already mentioned it but joining and playing with a Corp is a good way to go about it. Sure, you can run into some of the obnoxious asshats that are either very proud (or lying) about their giant bong hit but you also can get to talking to some players and get more fun out of the game. If you are having fun, you are less likely to get frustrated, more likely to play longer, and thereby improve. If you just want in a big corp that doesn't care who you are, Unholy Legion of Darkstar and DUST Uni are quite good, especially DUST Uni. Good group of people. Just throw an LFS in corp, maybe even a "I am a newbie" and you can expect some help.
If anyone asks, you can just tell the truth: "I am a high SP newbie because I made this character a long time ago but only got to this amount due to Passive SP."
Best of luck.

Yup, get in squads.
D-Uni is specifically organized for new players to learn from vets. Give them a try.
Personally, and I know he gets a lot of flack around here, watching King Thunderbolt's youtube videos actually helped me learn a lot of the subtle nuances in this game. That's not saying that I'm any kind of 'good', but I'm much improved over where I started. Yeah, he's kind of flamboyant, but what helps out the most is the fact that he shows complete matches in his vids. You can sit back and pay attention to all the smaller details that you otherwise miss, because he's the one doing the dodging / sneaking / etc. Really helps to watch 'over the shoulder' so to speak. Anyways, the other one I like to watch is Saxonmish. Only issue with his vids is that guy is just too damn fast, lol. But he also is a good one to watch and learn from. Either way, pay attention to what they do and why.
Otherwise, I'd say pick a MLT / Basic suit and weapon combo. Play no less than 10 matches in only that setup. You'll find that every weapon fits a niche, and it's not always the niche that YOU want to fill.
Anyways, good luck, hope this helps. |

After 1 year 6 months of playing i still suck at shooting too. Can you picture the guy holding an automatic weapon that shoots everything but the guy in front of him? thats me!
I adapted though, Dusts battles are not CoD or Battlefield. I start with a 3k scout and place spawn points on the map. Then I run to supply depot, change to free fit, suicide. Then at the best spawn point, I go with logi, drop nanohives. Then back to supply depot, change to free fit and suicide.
Then I just snipe, or stay on rocket launcher duty for any ADS. All this and I don't even have to shoot one bad guy and get 1k+ wp. |

The best way to play this game is with other people. I still have off games where I do terrible when solo.
There are tons of chat channels out there, ask around in the squad finder for channels that people might be interested in letting you join.
Also, try using flux grenade mass driver combo. Even mlt is deadly against proto scouts that seem to be the main thing people are using.
