It's so sad to see so much hate for heavies now. I've been a heavy since January of 2013, I've seen them go up and go down, the majority of the game they were under powered until we got our bonuses and racial Suits. But I still played them. Through all the **** we endured because the concept of the heavy is fun to me. I feel like terminator, slowly stalking you with my big gun while you flee for your lives.
But what sucks is that the heavy had become easy to play with the exceptions of scouts as our counter. What sucks about that is now since sentinel are easy to play, we're identified as the scrub class.
What have I done to stand apart from these people? Skilled into minmitar commando with combat rifle and swarms. I don't see too many commandos. I love the challenge. Playing two separate roles AV and assault. I wanna see more commandos. Learning to play that class is a blast!
TLDR: sucks that heavies now are easier to play. I'm doing commando work now for a better challenge. I challenge other career heavies to do the same.

As somebody who ran Sentinel and Scout through early uprising.... And the only thing people hate more than Sentinels now is Scouts. Yeah, this is pretty much how I feel.
I still run Sentinel and Scout but kind of run it a certain way. Scout: Speed tank, max HP on my proto fit is 550 total HP. No going over that, everything else is Speed! Scrambler Pistol and Nova Knives is a good style that requires fine precision and engagement planning. Sentinel: Rep tank, live without a logi, get creative in your engagements. CQC with a forge, treat it like a charged shotgun.
It's actually quite fun and good for dealing with FotM chasers (stabbing tanked out cloaked shotgun scouts with a knife is a good insult, and most heavies when getting into a sentinel vs sentinel fight don't expect a forge shot to insta-blap them). Minmatar Sentinel is a fairly un-used suit as well, slap some kin cats on and give that a try.

Right now im also trying gallente logi ad well as amarr logi. Not to mention the previously discussed commando edit:probably minmitar sentinel next

Both Sentinels and Scouts had their time in the dumpster, now they've had it in the limelight.
Shotguns and stupid strafing are the backbone of irritation with regards to Scouts: ******-o high DPS/tank and such close confines are the reasons why people dislike Sentinels.
- Strafe should have inertia - Shotguns should have a longer ranged (25-30m optimal) have a much tighter spread, do less overall damage but have roughly equivalent DPS to an AR - Sentinels need a longer effective range/more options besides HMG/FG: Amarr and Caldari Heavy anti-infantry weapons would help break them out of being corner-murder-bastards - They also need to be somewhat less amazingly resilient: the difference between a Sentinel and an Assault should be reasonable, but the access to heavy-grade weapon should mean that that gap isn't as large as it is (especially given the various resistances)
