Note: Vet Rambling and DUST history ahead. TL;DR Thanks Rattati, and what's up to anyone who I know
For reference, I've been playing DUST since the end of the E3 build.
I've had a roller-coaster of emotions and a hell of a lot of memories playing DUST. I remember when we were all complaining about how strong a Sagaris was, and when GD reached its 10,000th thread. I remember when Maken Tosch started his Naruto-esque "Diary" series, and grew from a blueberry to the OG Nova Knifer that he is now. I remember when Laser Rifles and Mass Drivers were first installed, and all the rage that the "Noob Tube" generated.
All in all, I had a blast with Dust for the better half of my time here. My fondest memories were from the Chromosome patch. These memories had little to do with DUST design up until that point - I think that DUST is a far better game circa 1.9 - and much more to do with the energy within and about the game. By the time we were in Chromosome, DUST had built up a hype as "The next big thing" in the gaming world by linking two games together. I'd learned a great deal about DUST in closed beta, and player counts were as high as 12,000 during open beta.
And however great the opinion of someone looking at DUST from the outside, the personal thrill that I had playing the game was far greater. Before PC, the competition in pubs was great (if you had a large amount of in game experience). Corp battles were more for bragging right and recreation, so anyone who was a great player but didn't want to run with a crew was only a few games away from being right in your face. It was around this time that I was the most into DUST - capping out every week, cycling through the active and passive boosters that I got from my four merc packs, etc. I left one corp looking for more activity and just focused on playing the game and getting better, and ran into the best corp of my life: PFBHz.
Fast forward to Fanfest 2014, and I felt the exact opposite. Nothing was fun, my friends were leaving and my corp split, reformed, then broke down again. I stopped actively playing a few days after. And while I read the forums like a newspaper (as I still do), I did it more out of habit than out of compassion.
Enter CCP Rattati.
Over the past few months, he's done more than I would have ever expected Post-Fanfest. Regardless of whether or not I agree with each balance change that he makes (I do), he has been a boon to the playerbase because he cares about this game as much as the 2,000 of us who have stuck it out through all of the #DUSTISDEAD, #PS2WILLKILLDUST, and #LOL514 threads. We all want the same thing - a fun, balanced game.
So I must tip my hat to you, Rattati. You've got me more than mildly interested about what's next for DUST. My personal hype about the game is growing glacially slow, but in the deepest recesses of my mind I am hopeful that DUST will be able to hold on with the small niche of people that we have carved out. I am personally looking forward to finding out what my rank is, seeing the changes to PC and orbitals, and actually buying a respec. I'm looking forward to playing this game and having fun again. And I owe that to you. Thanks again Rattati. Keep up the good work.
