So I've been spending a lot of my time jumping between Dust 514, Battlefield 4, Warthunder Ground Forces, and several other FPS and TPS that include vehicles in some way or another and have recently come back into Dust 514 mainly piloting Rail and Missile HAV.
Honestly what irks me the most about tanking besides its lack of customisability and over simplified mechanics is that it's cannon.......the largest and arguably (established by cannon......and logic to some degree) most powerful weapons in the game have atrociously short ranges (this also applies to AV weapons as well).
Did I or did I not just magnetically accelerate a slug to sub-hypersonic speed and project it out at a target........I mean I remember Rail Snipers, I hated them too but this is perhaps the only game in which I cannot project a round accurately to roughly 600m to hit a target.

I really appreciate rail tanks, but god forbid 600 meters range, entire matches wasted, looking at each other waiting for a little error of the other to bi-shot him. I just want back the splash damage, infantry is simply lolling @ rail tanks.

I am glad range was reduced. There was nothing more obnoxious than wanting to have a good ol' Tank Fight but there was some cowardly bastard sitting the in redline with a double damage mod Sica quivering in their boots about something 600 meters away.
For the reason other than game balance? Rounds are made by the lowest bidder and they begin to break apart when fired that fast in an atmosphere.

Why would you develop any kind of fire arm that you mount on a tank that is inferior both scientifically and in terms of effectiveness than a traditional artilery round.
You'd think with space faring capabilities that allow a persons consciousness to interface with an inanimate object.....we might....just might be able to project some kind of round more than 600m.

You basically mean a brawl with blasters.
That is NOT a good tank fight, that's a poorly designed .50cal slug fest. A good tank fight (Warthunder Ground Forces, World of Tanks, Battlefield 4 in some respects) is slow, methodical, all about precision and position at range.
Considering in Dust 514 that HAV rounds cannot destroy buildings, do not have explosive AoE (I wish they did), and primarily can only be directed at vehicle I wonder why we reduced their range?
Better trade off would be.
Buff Direct Damage slightly Add slight AOE Buff Range Buff Zoom Decrease Magazine Capacity. Increase Reload Times Increase Heat Build Up Slightly decrease Tracking Time Decrease Angles of Elevation

Because properly balancing them proved to be to hard so putting a leash on it sufficed. I would like to see their RANGE back with some limited to their effectiveness in the red line.

Real rail guns Fire rounds at mach 7 and higher which is 2.4 kilometers per second they have passed mach ten with rail guns as well

Hell I'd love to see the railgun become the Elephant Rifle of HAV.

Personally I've been murdering infantry well without the splash, more then enough practice to OHK those damnable bunny-hoping scouts with swarms, I just need to be 80+ meters away for reliable hits. An AOE would be icing on the cake again, but I've never really killed using that in any build with railguns.
What I would like to see though is a small range increase, from the 300m range we have now, to a 350 or 375 meter range. There's an uncomfortable small "safe zone" of just 50m when engaging enemy missile tanks, and that bothers me. I'm not sure how this would effect FGs though, they might need an appropriate range increase as well as they are the theoretical counter.
EDIT: I have discovered though that Rails are not exactly hitscan... on an off-topic note, I had for the first time two days ago an instance where with large rails, I killed the enemy HAV and then died an eyeblink later on the killfeed from his own railgun. Rather odd.

Because people hate getting killed from far away (vehicle users in this case, ADS pilots mostly). It's like how some infantry complain about getting killed by anything at more than a 100m. People seem to think the ranges in dust are just too long.

You know why this was changed, two main reasons that I would put it down to at least.
1. Killing ADS`s with immunity from 600+m. A lot of dropship pilots campaigned against this including Judge Rad.
2. Damage modded and otherwise redline railgun sniping, killing with immunity.
Pretty much all of the changes to range are effectively because of the redline. I think the redline should have been addressed as that was the problem.
"Damn a tank is sniping me from wayyyy over there in my tin can dropship, ok I will fly around the edge of the map sneakily and attack him" - Couldn't do this because of the redline - so eventually range was changed.
Then we move onto the more recent sniper change.
"Damn I'm getting sniper from way back over there at the top of that hill somewhere. . . . . . humm. . . I know! I will flank from the east side with a scout and go and hunt that sniper down" - Couldn't do this because they were TOO deep in the redline.
Basically there is only game design to blame so CCP did what they could with limited resources and changed the easier part of the problem, hence range reductions.

What are you talking about, guns aren't supposed to kill people! It doesn't matter if they're infantry carried or vehicularly mounted guns outright should not ever kill people.

Itis not that weapons can't go that far, it is that under the circumstances they just don't hit. It is suspension of disbelief brought about by limitations of mechanics. In this case, the map sizes amd design mixed with small teams.

The masses raged at the unfair abuse of redline. In response, the Jove forced weapon manufacture to produce sub-par product. The mystical magical power of the redline was too powerful for even mysterious Jove to control.
