So, Uprising 1.9 is coming. That's interesting, but brightly highlights the lack of communication about Legion.
At FanFest nearly 6 months ago, we were told that client patches to Dust were basically impossible because of Legion development. Even before that it's clear that any discussion on the core issues that Dust 514 suffers- things like a broken tiering system, lack of proper organizational tools, underdeveloped game modes and map designs just to name a few- those discussions were falling on deaf ears. After the completely unnecessary shock of FanFest, it seemed that feedback on those core issues needed to shift to Legion.
A couple dev-sponsored feedback threads popped up, and then we have nothing...for five months. Well, not entirely nothing. One content-lite snippet is at the very bottom of this dev blog after four and a half months of nothing. Last week some fans identified that a few seconds of Legion footage had sneaked its way into the recent theatrical release John Whick. Just today an interview that's completely devoid of content came out of Eve Vegas. Here's a thread from Aeon Amadi on the subject.
Over the past few months we've seen wild, unqualified success on fixing Dust 514's balancing issues. That has been thanks in large part to CCP Rat, his hard-working team, and their willingness to engage the community properly. In the world of Eve Online, this winter's major patch for the game is practically a candy-filled wonderland of scratches to community identified itches. In today's interview, even, Ryan Geddis claims that CCP have a dialog with the community and that it is pivotal to CCP's success.
If this is a dialog, then Dust 514's last three years of development have proceeded smoothly and we're all enjoying a robust product with all the features that were part of its original vision.
My question from the subject line stands: What happened to Legion? All we hear out of CCP is about how important community feedback is to them. We have hard evidence of that feedback's success. Yet nary a word is breathed about Legion. How can a single company be so bipolar, with the one hand praising its community and with the other refusing to listen to that community's advice on the game that robbed Dust of its future? All we have left to us is speculation:
- Is the vision for Legion so wildly divergent from Dust's that CCP fear another exodus of core players when they release info about it?
- Is Legion actually still being made? Is it in stasis while everyone waits with baited breath for Valkyrie to come out?
- Historically when CCP has gone quiet on important Dust news, things like this year's meltdown of a FanFest happen. Just how bad is it this time?
To CCPers: This silence about Legion isn't okay.
It isn't okay from the perspective of loyalty to your customers and community. We've stuck with you through a tumultuous Dust 514 development for the last three, for some even four, years. Surely it's a small thing to ask, after that, for even the smallest amount of information needed to quell the wild speculation we've been forced to appeal to with Legion.
It isn't okay from a business perspective, either. The Dust 514 community represents an incredible well of insight and experience about the best and worst of the game whose underpinning designs are the same as Legion's. That advising is available to you, free of charge. From the marketing side, you guys ought to know from FanFest that bottling up Legion information and then releasing it all at once can only alienate your paying customers. Every time another member of the core Dust community leaves in disgust, that's one less person who will advocate for you in a niche gaming demographic.

To the community: I'd like to encourage everyone not to be distracted from pursuing Legion information by the changes to Dust. Those changes are great, but I think we can all agree that 1.9 isn't a big, core fix to Dust. It's a little more of the same (maps), and an admission that they'll never manage a player market. The balance changes are good, but they're at best patches over a wound that needs 35 stitches and a prayer.
If we want to get some info about Legion, we've got to:
- Put on and keep up some pressure
- Be civil about it

CCP doesn't have the money or resources to make Legion happen. You will not receive a Dev response with any substance regarding this issue.

They aren't ready to announce anything.. They'll get to it eventually, its CCP, they like to announce things then have amnesia for awhile, then mention it after a decent chunk of time.
If you find an issue and I stumble upon your thread, I will do my darnedest to get the issue known.

I have always said that the silence is ok to me for good reason. Mainly because I got so tired of CCP promising a lot of things but hardly delivering that I wanted them to SHUT UP for once and don't come out with any more promises unless they are now ready to deliver on that promise this time.
But I guess after waiting through 5 months of total silence it might be a good time to turn on the speakers and hear what CCP has ready at this point. I still don't expect to see a complete game yet since 5 months is still too short of a time frame to complete any ambitious project like Legion. But what I do expect to see at this point is something that is now more than just a mere demo. Something that looks less like a project and more like a greenlit game. Surely 5 months is at least sufficient enough to show us more than just one little map with burning trees.

Agreed, that seems to be the pattern of communication we've had about Dust for the last several years. As previously observed, that has worked out really well for them. (internet sarcasm is off the charts)
If Legion development is going to be slow, then so be it. That leaves us plenty of time to discuss the game publicly and make sure it's the best possible product. Look at what just 6 months of community feedback have done for Dust after years of stagnation.

I really couldn't care less about Legion. Dust is the game I started playing and unless they migrate to the PS4, Legion is worthless to me. I'd much rather they pulled the plug on Legion before any more money drains away so they can focus on making what they already have actually great.

Personally, I like consoles because they are much more readily accessible. I'm not greatly computer literate, or at least I'm not when it comes to hardware. So picking up a package that is everything I need is far more desirable than having to replace X/Y/Z every so many months and not mess it up.
Simply put, consoles are far more accessible.

A) it is ready to demo at fan fest in May, 2015
B) it is ready to ship
C) it gets canned
D) CCP leaks news about A,B or C.
At least very few Dust514 Mercs are expecting anything. Besides you, of course. 
My favorite tank is a Lightning. Just sayin.

I want Legion so bad. An FPS game made by CCP where they are hopefully free of Sony and console crap. Dust 514 can stay as the glorified lobby shooter CCP seems to have birthed, just bring the real game to PC please. I don't care how many Dust 514 players burn at the stake as I will at least rebirth into something better. Just make Legion CCP. |
