Sadly I haven't had time to play, and tonight is my first chance playing in over a month. So imagine my surprise when I sighted in on some fool dancing in my scope, clear enough that I can see his neck... and pull the trigger, but no hit... So I play a few rounds, I notice that my head shot damage is slightly increased on some targets, and largely increased on others, 180%-280%... But my range is drastically lower... I finally log out to read the 'hotfix' notes... You say you reduced the range 'a little'... Previously, my ideal range for finding my target was north of 400 meters... I have pictures I took of my longest kill, 596.92 meters... Now I have to crawl in close... Congratulations!!! Might as well rid yourselves entirely of the sniper class. As I mentioned in a previous post, your premise is in space, in the far future, so tell me why a sniper rifle that has a downrange speed of greater than 2500m/s has a range less than 1/6th that distance? There are modern snipers, like in recent history that have made shots in excess of 1000 meters... 1.47 miles, 2474 meters... And I can't even get scope data or even hope to hit someone at 400 meters in the game.
Please tell me what you're basing this insanely pathetic range on? Who decided this wonderful plan to make snipers move in closer? Someone have a personal beef against them? I like that you increased the magazine on the Kalioka sniper rifle, (yeah I know I spelled that wrong) now I may actually have a chance to drop a heavy... oh wait, who am I kidding, he's gonna run up on me and beat me to death with a stick before I'll get off enough shots to hurt him...
I love how my prototype sniper rifle has a range less than the militia equipment I trained with when I started playing.
We need LONGER range on the sniper rifle. Not shorter. We should be allowed to see, and hit our target at 800 meters. I'll even take a damage penalty for every 100 meters past 500, I'm ok if I even have to retrain my shooting to 'lead' my target at ranges over 500 meters. But you got to give us the range. Make it so the other team CANNOT afford to ignore us, make it so they have to get snipers out on their team to locate and remove us, because nothing else can get to us... Stop hurting the class.
And to all you nay sayers, and people crying about snipers popping you at extreme ranges, stop holding still, run in erratic patterns, don't just 'jump' around, and better yet, get snipers on your team. Oh the sniper is this, the sniper is that, you play your way, I'll play mine. It's hard work finding good places to hide, good places that you don't look for me, that my team mates dismiss, and I can klaxon you when you stand still long enough.
Sniping is about LOS to target, maximizing potential targets while limiting the places they can 'get' you from. Sniping is also camping, the more shots we can take from a specific position, the higher our score. If you want to oust a sniper from position, grab a rifle and hammer home the point that you know where we are... Snipers are safer if they don't have to move after every shot. The more running around I do the more likely I am to get shot.
And if you keep making rifles that AREN'T labeled 'SNIPER' out distance our prototype gear, you should just do away entirely with the class. This is beyond stupid...

The haters thought it would stop redline sniping. Of course, that was a stupid notion, and it hasn't lessened it at all (nothing will ever stop this, even removing the sniper class completely will just create a legion of AFKers), but thankfully it's now even more difficult to counter-snipe redline snipers. Way to go, morons.
Oh, and it wasn't just a range nerf. The charge had it's clip and overall ammo capacities nerfed HARD. |

When you can adequately explain why you need to be able to be too deep in the redline to attack without a sniper rifle you may have the range back.
1: You must use logic. 2:You may not use "facts" about sniping culled from movies and other shooters.
EVE Online is what you get when engineers attempt to create "fun" without consulting someone who comprehends the word.

I was getting more kills and taking out more enemy equipment when I had more ammo, so yes, actually. |

I love it. Toss a sniper on a Caldari Commando with a RR or better yet, an ARR. Once you ctch wind of a sniper, set up and pop him then get back into the action.
Mercs whine about the rail rifle but refuse to shield tank to counter it.
But that's none of my business.

The answer the OP is looking for is that this is a game, not real life. So while real snipers can hit targets miles away it is not a mechanic that would make this game fun for all players.
I agree that the shortened range did not help get snipers out of the redline, and as I've said before my trolly half wants to say that is because the range wasn't nerfed hard enough. Remember the whole reason snipers shouldn't be in the redline is the risk/reward balance that hiding in the redline upsets thus decreasing the fun for other players.
A better solution would have been a countdown timer for the friendly redline much like the one for the enemy redline. Then it would have been impossible to stay in the redline and would force participation from all players leading to more fun for all.
Now with more evil.

300 meters isn't "close" you have no need to "crawl" you can easily sprint up dance around 300 meters from anyone with a rifle and then sit there for 2 minutes as they run at you before popping a headshot...
Get in the battle and enjoy the thrill of people not having to suicide if they want to fight you... Heck get in the objective and snipe outwards, it's far more fun. |

Snipers deserve to be useless, they do not belong in this game as the maps are too untactical and open for it to be fair regardless.
The only concern is roof campers, though the game has been bashed around in attempts to "balance" it. So roof camping is a solution to that.
The caldari cannot take over this game because nearly every gun destroys shields in 1-2 button taps. Calamari is life.

Sniping is good right now. That head shot multiplier your noticing is because heavies have certain protection against certain types of weapon damage.
Even though sniping isn't as prevalent as before it is still extremely common to see whole squads of Snipers.

All I'm going to say is that today I was able to go on a pretty murderlicious streak just using a STD-level tac sniper rifle and Sniper Rifle Ops L2... my intent was to counter snipe, but I ended up with a pretty good position, and no competent enemy snipers.
Overall, I'm really liking the changes to the sniper rifles. It was also stated by several CPM members that CCP showed them data that indicated the vast majority of sniper fire was directed from less than 400 meters, and very few shots were ever fired at 500-600 meters.
Moreover, due to a combination of rendering issues and map design it was judged to be a much better move to reduce sniper rifle range, in exchange for greatly increasing the lethality of the rifles; a good example is that they all have improved headshot damage, the tac has had it's capacity doubled, and the Charge is no longer the be-all end-all of sniper rifles.
