Salutations, Zindorak and all who posted here. If all of you who posted are new to Dust, let me first notify you that Dust 514 has a CONTROVERSIAL and wild GÇ£Aim AssistGÇ¥ feature in you menu options. IGÇÖm not crazy enough to even explain to you HOW it does what it does, but regardless if youGÇÖre Newberry or Veteran to fps games, DustGÇÖs Aim Assist is NOTHING like what you have had in any other game.
Before you TRY hard to manually improve your aiming skills, please make the decision to turn the Aim-Assist ON and leave it on always---or turn it OFF and leave it off always. If you try running with it GÇ£onGÇ¥ some days, and GÇ£offGÇ¥ other days, youGÇÖre only going to cripple your aiming skills the way reading with a shaky flashlight cripples your eyesight.
On or Off for Aim-Assist is a tough call to make---each of us either LOVES what it does for us, or HATES its odd-logic and curses it. Again, explaining when itGÇÖs choosing to help you and how itGÇÖs helping you is too long an explanation---it is a WICKED piece of game design, the boldest IGÇÖve seen in a shooting game.
Second notification I have to give you is that, as of yesterday, your tv screen rendering and framerate has been boosted in ways that will cause many players to have to GÇ£re-learnGÇ¥ their aiming techniques---wha? Many of us have been so used to how our targets rendered in this game, that the GÇ£new spiffy framerateGÇ¥ will throw our aim off, and cause some of us to RE-decide what we want to do with our Aim-Assist option. Yes, itGÇÖs like we are ALL Newberrys again, for a while.
I wonGÇÖt make your Aim-Assist choice for youGÇöthatGÇÖs your call. But after youGÇÖve made your decision, STICK to that choice, erase GÇ£assistGÇ¥ concepts from your mind and go to step 2:
Step-2 Take a good oleGÇÖ normal gun---Standard Gallente militia AR, or a Standard Amarr Scrambler Pistol. (It must be one of these, because they are short-to-midrange weapons, and if youGÇÖve chosen Aim-Assist ONGÇöAim Assist varies when and how much itGÇÖs going to help you with every weapon).
Practice like CRAZY, aiming and shooting, aiming, AIMING, and shooting. To get GOOD at aiming, you need to be aware there are at least 4 shooting encounters that will alter how fast the player youGÇÖre shooting at will lose his GÇ£healthGÇ¥: 1GÇöIf you put your curser on him and fire from the HIP, a certain number of your rounds will hit him per minute. 2GÇöIf you put your curser on him while AIMING with the eyepiece, a DIFFERENT number of rounds will hit him per minute. 3GÇöIf you KNEEL and do either 1 or 2 above, a DIFFERENT number of rounds will hit him per minute. 4GÇö(BIG-ONE) GÇô If heGÇÖs running while youGÇÖre firing at him, his dropsuit gets whittled down by your rounds FASTER than if he just stood still and confronts you. (this is kinda weird, like his protection becomes weakened if the suitGÇÖs PG used to move his arms and legsGÇöhey, I donGÇÖt know..) Players will constantly agree/deny these 4 shootout situations above, and not realize that itGÇÖs stepping into each of these conditions thatGÇÖs changing your results----itGÇÖs not a deficiency in you aim. YouGÇÖll have to PRACTICE in each of the 4 encounters and compensate differently.
Note: The differences I just decribed change PER weapon (a breach AR is more accurate from the hip---a standard AR is more accurate with the eyepiece, etc). ThatGÇÖs why itGÇÖs important NOT to keep swapping around weapons until AFTER you get good with just the Standard AR or Scrambler pistol (swapping around only mucks up whatever aiming skill youGÇÖve started to develop).
This explanation was long, and thatGÇÖs how long youGÇÖll need to practice it (discipline, nervousness-control, repetition, TRUCKLOADS of hours). ThatGÇÖs how the vets got good at itGÇöthey just want you to THINK they were expert enough to do this overnight.
Happy hunting, Zindorak!

And you should find a sensitivity you like.
I personally keep my Sens on max. #Frantic AAHH, see? That's a mistake we all made when we were first introduced to the Aim-Assist.
It's NOT like any aim-assist in other games. It's VERY particularly strong, and can be so helpful that many experienced fps players curse it or call it unfair or dishonorable.
Depending on the weapon you're using at the time, it DOES track a strafing enemy beautifully (so beautifully it takes all the effort out of aiming yourself, and makes the victim complain that you're cheating). But it depends on type of weapon and your distance from the target, and if you're aiming from hip or from down-sight---too many factors for you to want to have on your mind when you're shooting! When you're consciously thinking about the Aim-Assist, you end up "fighting" the assister during your shooting/aiming/strafing, and the slightest manual jerking of the gun will deactivate what the assister is trying to do for you.
That's what makes most players, especially very experienced fps players who are very new to Dust, feel the Aim-Assist isn't operating for them at all when it's ON.
That's why having Aim-Assist ON or OFF is a decision you need to make first----then walk away from it permanently and go practice your shooting.
