I played Knights of the Old Republic and KOTOR2 back in the day. Loved them - they're two of my top 5 games. I played The Old Republic for a few hours when it went FTP but thought it was absolutely horrible. Even so, I didn't have too much of a problem with it existing, because it's set hundreds of years after KOTOR so presumably wouldn't impact on the KOTOR era much, right?
WRONG.
I started seeing adverts for a Revan expansion for TOR and figured 'you must run around picking up Revan-related loot and skills, activating holocrons giving you a bit of his backstory. Pretty cool for people who play the game'. But the expansion actually has Revan still hanging around three hundred years later even though the most powerful human Sith/Jedi only live for a hundred or so years. (WUT?) This is because the Sith Emperor (whoops, did we forget to mention him in KOTOR and KOTOR2? <3 Bioware) has trapped him in suspended animation or something all that time, for lols. The cheesy deus ex machina is strong with this one.
Things get even more stupid after that. Revan manages to free himself and declares war on the Jedi AND the Empire. Last we heard from him he had a baby with a nice Jedi lady and the council were his homies, but **** that because... reasons. And if your plan is to defeat two massive armed forces, who are sworn enemies of each other, the best strategy is to go in guns blazing on both of them, so they unite against you. Obviously.
Basically my point is that this all just sounds absolutely ridiculous. They've taken the central character in the KOTOR era, a leader who commanded respect among all, and turned him into an imbecile that switches sides at the drop of a hat and chooses the worst possible strategies for achieving his objectives.
They've also put the kibosh on KOTOR3. So what, you might say, they only care about TOR. But what have they done for TOR, exactly? People who didn't play KOTOR will think, why are they shamelessly shoehorning in this guy from a different era, who I've never heard off? People who did play KOTOR will think THAT ISN'T RAVEN, he was around three hundred years ago and he wasn't a moron. So for no good reason they've basically cut off a big future revenue stream (KOTOR 3 and sequels), that could quite comfortably have existed alongside TOR or replaced it (since TOR isn't exactly a roaring success).
(PS - I know some of the 'new' Revan story, with the Emperor etc., was added in the Revan book, but that book was made to prepare the way for TOR. It's part of the same project to which I am objecting.)
TL;DR The new Revan storyline in TOR is stupid, and I am cultivating a neckbeard. |

Reading that has made me want to travel across the Atlantic to Edmonton just to punch whoever is in charge of TOR. I'll not stand for Revan being disgraced like this. What's next? A time travelling Darth Vader?

is it possible to play as a clone trooper in the old republic....honestly i dont care for light sabers.
a dc-17 blaster rifle will beat even the most hardened of sith or jedi. u just the "need" skills to use it.
also i have yet to play any of the knights of the old republic games sadly all i have is my star wars battlefront games.

(He's a big KOTOR fan and if he learned of what Bioware did to their story and the Star Wars universe, there would be blood.)
Great job Bioware. I thought Bungie messed up by having Spartan-3s on Reach (effectively doing a ret-con) but this takes the cake.

also i have yet to play any of the knights of the old republic games sadly all i have is my star wars battlefront games. TOR is tens of thousands of years before the clone wars so there aren't clone troopers per se. But yes, you can play as a republic trooper or (I think) sith trooper in TOR. Don't bother though, it's bad.
The first part of KOTOR you play as a soldier, scout or scoundrel, and can't use lightsabres even if you want to. I mostly used lightsabres later on but I think you can stick with blaster rifles if you like. If you can tolerate 2003 graphics it is totally worth a play through. |
