By no means am I a top tier player in this game, but I do well in Pubs and after playing this game for about 10 months I feel I can give some good advice to new players. So here is a brain dump of concepts and tactics that I have picked up while playing this game.
I'll come back to this post at a later date and add some more and maybe structure it a little better.
NOTE: I've left out concepts related to character skills, different drop-suits and their fittings as there are plenty of threads about this already.
1. Use terrain to your advantage. - Do not linger out in the open. Cross wide open areas as quickly as possible and only after having looked to make sure there are no opponents who will try to pick you off as you make your way. - Use hills or buildings for cover as much as possible - High-ground is a huge advantage in DUST firefights. Occupy the top of hills/mountains/buildings and deny them to your opponent.
2. Range. - Learn the range of each weapon and learn to recognize the weapons by their sound. - When outgunned by longer range weapons find a way to close the range (or disengage). To close the range, you can either approach under cover, try to flank, or hunker down and force them to come to you.
3. Know when to run. - Have an escape route planned. - If you are outgunned retreating is often a valid technique. - Don't try and take on 3 opponents who have seen you and are focusing their fire on your location. - Learn to recognize the different drop-suits and play according to their strengths. For example, don't attempt a frontal assault against a heavy when you are in a lighter suit.
4. Focus fire. - Target, and simultaneously shoot the same opponent as your teammates and watch them insta-die. - Flank your opponents so that they are caught in a cross fire.
5. Situational awareness - Know when you are susceptible to being flanked. - Check your six often. - Use headphones or a surround sound system and listen for enemies. You can hear their footsteps, you can hear their cloaks being deactivated. - If you hear a shotgun shot, jump backwards and look for that ^%^&@$ Scout.
6. Understand why and how you died. - There are only a fixed number of ways to die in DUST, play long enough and you will experience them all. Play longer and you will eventually recognize them and manage to avoid them (at least some of the time).
7. Keep on the move. - Standing still makes you an easy target and limits your field of vision. Unless you are aiming at something, you should be moving. - When staying in the same location circle strafe. Eventually you will even be able to aim while circle strafing. - Jumping is a good way to throw off your opponent's aim. The exception to this is when you are stepping back from the top of a hill.
8. Don't rush your easy kills. - When you blindside / sneak up on someone, take the extra fraction of a second to secure your aim and if you are close enough go for a head shot.
9. Gun mechanics - Fire in bursts. Try to avoid spraying and praying. You will be more accurate, your turn ratio will be quicker, you will save ammo and hopefully avoid being forced to reload during CQC (Close Quarters Combat). - Switching to a secondary weapon is usually quicker than reloading. - Reload after each engagement. - Figure out (this is different for each weapon) when to Aim Down the sights and when to hip-fire.
10. Aiming - Use your left analog stick (side step) to fine tune your aim rather than trying to make small adjustments with the right analog stick. - Lower your ADS (Aiming Down Sights) sensitivity setting. The default value is way to high.
How do you kill that which has no life?
