So I have been looking at the Fanfest Progression video and I had a few questions...
CCP Z stated that you would have to progress down a role to get to a certain weapon, I.E Mass Driver.
Now if I was to pick the Assault class but I than had to go down the Logi role later on and progress to the Mass Driver along the Logi's Demolition tree I acquire the MD. Would it not be better to just add the Demo. into the Assault role also or at least extended all of the bonuses like the Demo. because these bonuses it restrict weapons along it's tree line.
I am aware of the wildcard concept but this does not seem like it would help new players understand why you would want to have a different light weapon that is restricted in another role...For instance, if I choose the Mass Driver how do I understand that the Nanohive is important to use along side the Mass Driver. It is perhaps properly placed in the Logi tree because you may need alot of ammo that the Logi can provide with it's squad support roles. But still it does not seem like as a veteran I understand spreading all of these weapons and equipment across trees and backtracking into the two medium roles just to achieve what I have now in Dust.
You know you have at least thought about cow tipping. They know, and they're out to settle the score.

I personally am not a fan of the role/skill linkage. Roles +1, Skills +1 but combining the two just presents to many road restrictions, because notice nothing says you cannot have the MD on an Assault, you just need to train into the Logi to get it. Seems kind of like a kick in the balls. We shall see though the stuff at fanfest was super preliminary for all we know if/when this happens there could be crossbows in the game. That is how little we really know.

I agree with both of you, and these points were clearly presented to CCP Z in the thread on this forum. Hopefully he takes our feedback and comes up with something better.
I personally am in favor of each Dropsuit, weapon, module type, and equipment having its own tree, and some sort of certificate system to give new players a guide to follow.
It would be good if you could access the relevant part of the skill tree from the item information, so you could find what you want on the market, and then see what you need to train to get into it.
Another idea is to give new players complete skill plans for each of the major battlefield roles, and explain what the role of each setup is. It could be a multi stage plan with an intro fit that they can get into in a few days, an intermediate fit they could get into in a week, and an advanced fit that it would take a month to get into. Sort of a certificate system combined with a skill plan and fitting guide. If you get new players through the first couple of weeks they will learn enough to follow their own plan.
Basically I am in favor of giving new players suggestions of what they should skill into, rather than imposing restrictions on everybody just so that new players donGÇÖt get confused.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.
