In the beginning of the piece it seems as though he's alluding to a failed movie tie-in for Dust: IGN Comics: How were you brought on board with this project? Brian Wood: Well, as far as this mini-series goes it was my editor - the same editor I worked with on Conan - asked me. But I sort of have a relationship going back several years with the game developer, CCP. We had tried years ago to get a film project off the ground, a short film for a previous version of EVE. It was their Dust 514 game. We had almost gotten to the point were I was going to write and sort of help them work on a short film for that game. And for various reasons - it's not anybody's fault - it didn't happen. I think it was a marketing or financial thing. What do we think of this?? The Sound of Dust

From the wording I'd assume that he rather meant that they'd do their own spinoff project based on EVE like DUST 514 was created. And to me, a previous version of EVE doesn't fit with DUST 514 or the shooter genre in general, further asserting my belief that this planned movie wasn't going to be about DUST.
