Yup, that's same thing that happened to my 80gb 1/2nd gen PS3
however before all hope is lost I would recommend you check it's not just the HDD that's dying

I just bought 50 militia bolt pistols. Didn't even get to fire them once. :(
My PS3 is an 80gb model bought in 2008. So 6 years old. It's had a good run, but I took such good care of it. I kept it dust free (you know what I mean) and well ventilated.
The hard drive does briefly make a weird sound when I turn it on, then the green yellow red light show.

Happened to mine but I was still able to use it for a while. For mine if you tried to turn it on long enough it would eventually work. Once it's on it runs fine. I think there is a way to fix it yourself too, didn't try it though.

Gamestop will only offer him like $20 for it, Crimson. Better off tearing it apart and separately ebaying the good parts. |

I got $120 store credit for my old slim when I took it in. Granted, that was awhile ago... I'm sure he could get a little more than that for it though.

Sorry boyo u have propably YLOD or Yellow Light of Death. Its basicaly construction issue, where thermopaste between board and graphix melt of and CPU with GPU overheat desk. If you have 80gb FAT, u have 70 procent of possibility to have this S*hate. It fixable, but only for limited time. Sorry boyo

If the HDD is making a funky noise then is there any chance you could just swap it out to see if its that ? |

Gamestop has recently streamlined their trade-in service so that players can get a slightly bigger return in their trade-in.

Here's what gets me. I never made any changes to a PS3 so I don't know.
Isn't the operating system of the PS3 stored on the HDD like how you see an OS installed on a PC? Or is the OS stored separately from the HDD on a console?

HDD will contain all of your saved game/data files. PS3/4 were designed specifically to allow for the swapping out of HDDs.
Had the YLoD a few years ago and had to send it back to Sony to replace my 80GB fat model. Fortunately, I'm a PS+ member so I had my saved data uploaded to the cloud and was able to work from there.

1st check your had
Second if it randomly starts working it was overheated ...try repasting there is a tuniq ..i think t2..that will drop your rum temp by about 7 degrees ..
If it is a full yellow light of death and your running a phat ps3..it is recoverable without purchasing a new ps3...is not expensive i have 2 500 gb ps3 plays backwards compatible they were recalled a year ago when dust fried them cost me 75 bucks a pop...they now run 500 hdd. And they work and run like new..i put allot of strain on my systems..don't go dropping 100-200 on a new system unless u want the slight power increase

Yeah as far as I know unless you have been re buying your warranty ..they won't accept ylod anymore..but reballing is like half the cost of what it used to be
