Afternoon all,
OK so I'm a relative noob with 9 million odd SP and happily running starter fits and enjoying seeing my WP and K/D slowly climbing from abject to poor.
i know it's not the done thing but I'm enjoying working on getting them as good as they can be on SP alone before blowing ISK on 'proper' kit.
To that end I've been happily running medic with AR and SMG for the past 6 months or so as I could compensate for my lousy gun game with a bit of CQ spray and pray.
So..... I've still got my MCC SP to invest and the plan had been to complete a few more core skills, buff the SMG proficiency some more and maybe put a bit in the bolt pistol as my first ISK investment weapon (I've liked the concept since it came out and the Delta buffs looked good.......... What's that coming over the hill, is it the nerf bat?) obviously that plan now has to change and I was wondering if anyone had some advice on SP investment into my new toys.
Anyway, although personally inconvenienced, I'm really liking the fact that racial starter suits have some weapons variety now and am looking forwards to taking the Ion Pistol and Magsec out for a spin but with about 1/1.2 mil SP spare what's a good place to start?
I'm assuming kick reduction on the Magsec, and ammo capacity and sharpshooter on the ion?
Cheers folks. |

Salutations, Edgar!
Though "working of getting this stuff as good as they can on SP alone" is not the "done" thing---Edgar IT IS THE RIGHT THING. And good for you that you followed that path! (So many of us were DIRT-slow on understanding the advantages of pocketting your ISK, avoiding the "artificial enhancements", and just learning to get good on basic SP updgrades alone).
I have run a pimped-out medic starter suit for a year. A YEAR!. Just the starter suit, spending SP on just some shield and armor % skill-levels,... and using the remaining SP to build a suit-fitting that has NEVER been taken out on the field yet. Believe it or not, I am tried my FIRST EVER Light-Damage-Modifier module just yesterday. You did your 6 months of Dust WISE and SMART, my young Jedi. Seriously, Kudos! (cuz you have no idea just how painful others felt, after getting addicted to this game, but realizing they mis-managed their characters right down into SP/purchases/Aurum hole deeper than Dante's Inferno--Jeez!).
I will only recommend that, in keeping with the good-wisdom you've relied on so far, choose your specializing-weapons based on THE FIGHTING HABITS you've noticed in yourself over these 6 months,... NOT on any "favorite Role you have ambitions for". For example, I've watched a character who is successful skilling into a MagSec ONLY because she has a tendency to start a fight a medium distance from an enemy (using a Gallente AR), and end up walking up to her enemy as she continues shooting. It's a habit that uses up all her AR ammo insanely (and the AR is only good for stripping down sheilding!). But the MagSec is EXCELLENT for destroying armour--so as she swaps the empty AR for an advanced-Magsec, it LITERALLY saves her life, and decides the gunfight in her favor.
This is not a Role she picked. It's a weapon combo (AR + Magsec) that turns her reckless, hard to break habit into lethal success. Even a PROTO MagSec wouldn't help her in her playing style, but a combo of AR+less expensive ADV MagSec works perfectly. This sounds complicated, but it's actually true, that the "best" gun is heavily determined by the personal way you tend to engage your opponent, not the fantasy-technique we imagine we're using on our opponent.
So as you skill into MagSec, Ion pistol, ANYTHING,... look for what it can do penetrate that the rifle you carry can't penetrate very well, and skill into it only as much as you need to make a good "big weapon + side weapon" pair. that supports you tend to engage an opponent.
LOL, I am probably making your decisions even more difficult, but I have a hunch you'll continue to choose as wisely as you've been doing so far.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
