Hey there this will be a long rant. The tl;dr is in the title
I am an old EVE Veteran and I've been playing dust since the last beta build which was pretty much what I expected it to be: An unfinished, laggy and buggy shooter without any connection to the MMO. But I saw the potential: Industrial EVE Players building Tanks, Suits and Weapons, selling those to the dustmercs, sovholding EVE Players who hire dustmercs for taking control and protect planets and stations and Pilots who can be hired and paid by Dustmercs for orbital support, transport, equipment etc. Wow that would be sooooo cool. Maybe some generic missions given by NPC Agents for soloartists or small/big groups of players to get started and earn early isk until they get involved with the big guys. Maybe a little arena where mercs fight against mercs for fun but without any real consequences to try out that new gun or learn to fly in a combat scenario. Gods that game will be awesome
Those were my thoughts at the mentioned beta. Now the release came and it turns out that bugs were fixed, with more updates lag was reduced, graphics improved and some new tools and toys were introduced. But somehow the game was less fun than the beta. I've been incredibly disappointed so I stopped playing after a couple of weeks and checked back every couple of month to see if I liked the game a little better still hoping for the game that I imagined. This procedure was in place from release till today.
If one asks me what I liked most in Dust 514 I would say the keyboard and Mouse controls with on the fly switching and with those changing tooltips depending on what controller had been used last. That was really cool. Sniping with a mouse, driving with a controller - that was really well done. If one asked me what I didn't like about dust I wont know what to start with.
Performance issues, booooring map design, poor balancing, exploits pretty much everywhere, poor gameplay, bad movement, bad economy, bad progression paths, stupid AUR sales everywhere, long loading times, poorly designed market (that was after the market fix. before that it was an unspeakably stupid designed market), useless skills, the obvious limits of a playstation, slow updates and much more but most important: EVE implementation. The things I dreamed of while in beta are not that hard to imagine but what we have now after 1.5 years is a little bit of bombardement. Also there is this Faction Warfare that has little to no impact whatsoever. "Oh noes the dust mercs have taken the planets we have to do plusminus 5 sites in faction war, that will take us half an hour more/less". Each of those issues can be explained in a really long post and... well it has been. There's a reason why the features and ideas discussion has more than 30.000 topics with the rest of the forums beeing quite empty.
CCP Rouge wrote:I know that a lot of you have been really disappointed and wanted to see much more on the future of DUST 514 in its current form and I absolutely understand that feeling.
I absolutely dont! Dust514 is S H I T and it pretty much always has been. It might be a decent standalone shooter and especially since it's kinda free2play it's quite nice for a battle here and there for less serious gamers or at least those who dont give a frag about EVE though I often thought that CCP should've hired some third party company that is actually experienced when it comes to online FPS games (Digital Extremes, Epic Games, DICE) to fix basic gameplay flaws. However: Dust514 tries to be this New Eden shooter that somehow wants to work with EVE and with valkyrie in future and for that ambition it fails horribly.
Therefore a fresh start on an actually useful platform is the best Idea you could have and it again fills me with hope. Thanks for that. Dont care how long it takes but get it right. Have the development mentality of duke nukem forever and the quality control of blizzard entertainment in mind. "it's done when it's done" and "the janitor is not okay with the coloring of that button so lets rework the UI from scratch"
If I might throw in an Idea that could be awesome (though it's actually yours but from a long time ago): When PI in EVE was first announced there was talk of districts and different ways to handle a colony. The industrialist way will produce quite some ressources but damages the eco system. The eco system influences all of the planet and therefore all of the districts and all of the players who settled on that planet, leading to conflicts between districts and war. PI right now is like invisible buildings that are not really there and ressources shifting around which is kinda stupid and players can build on top of each other which is also stupid. The Idea: Go back to districts in EVE. A limited number of districts per planet. Have predefined building slots in each district. Players can choose what to build in each slot. Right now ignore that eco system thingy I mentioned but let people decide between military and industry buildings. A complete optimized set of industry buildings has 120% ressource output compared to now but of course no room for military and defensive structures. Those structures provide benefits for the defending part of footsoldiers. Now we have like a billion planets in EVE and it's obviously impossible to make as many unique battlegrounds for Dust/legion so make the maps generic. You have 8 planet-types and 4 basic biomes (thinking about the middle of the ocean, mountains, rivers and just normal grasslands) - that makes 25-32 (some biomes dont work with some planettypes) basic background scenarios and landscape designs. Now put those buildingslots on the maps. Done. The EVE Player who builds his colony influences the battlefield for the troops. A billion different planets, a billion different maps and a billion different situations for the footsoldiers. |

A lot of the issues with Dust isn't necessarily because of the PS hardware like shooting, balancing, map design, certain content , physics, etc and is mostly CCPs troubles with developing the game as it is. So I can say that you might experience that again in Legion if it ever comes out and if they learned from their experience.
There's a chance that on PC the game can be a better quality product because they are more familiar with the system , but at the same time so is the PS4 a little . Also there's a chance the game can be end up as an un-optimized mess like plenty of pc games are and was. Lastly, it could end up in development hell just like WoD, while they do have some form of foundation I doubt it that's how the game it going end up.
CCP said that Legion won't be connected to Eve at the start. |

First of all the little phrase beta makes alot of flaws seem okay. One has always in mind that "this will be improved" or "that'll be changed" or "the game crashed, hmm well it's still beta". Those thoughts become quite rare when you play the release version
Also the gameplay differed alot from what we see today: The map was divided into a couple of parts, each part had objectives that could either be hacked or destroyed in order to progress into the next section, including moving spawnpoints for both teams. The last part was a fortified base with a couple of XL Turrets that shot the MCC all the time from the start. Those turrets (as fair as I know) had to be hacked. The defenders did not have an MCC and they obviously won when the enemy MCC was down. The attackers won when the MCC (which is slowly moving towards the base all the time) eventually reached it. There were alot of different strategies involved too. Defenders who sat in tanks or turrets could shoot the MCC, get some points for it and help destroying it a little faster but since the MCC was high in the air those players could be easily spotted and taken out. If the defenders were really good at defending the early targets, the attackers could just shoot the beacon down. Hacking was be alot faster and therefore better but the simple destruction was a nice last effort to secure victory. If I remember correctly the defenders also had unlimited clones and the attackers clone count was filled after each part victory. That was really fun and every game was different.
What we have today is essentially just the last section, which is on it's own just an deathmatch arena in a base that belongs to nobody.

Thats fine. See that the game works first and then implement it into the scary economy of eve is absolutely allright. Even in little steps like they did in dust is alright - but it should be a "little bit" faster. The more time they take between release and full implementation the harder it'll be eventually. |

Don't get excited or optimistic at all. Don't read hype and don't go in with expectations other than "it's a sci-fi fps". Promises are just words. Play the game and judge it based on what you have, not what it will have in a year plus. Don't wait for things that are "promised" to show up, and don't "hold off" on saying or doing anything because it's "unfinished" or "not meeting expectations".
Trying to hype people up on a spiritual successor (that was announced, what... a year after Dust's joke of a release) of a vastly mediocre game is illogical and downright silly. I've spent more time with Dust than I EVER wanted to, and it has proven to me time and time again that CCP had no idea what they were doing or how they were going to go about doing it.
That's why it's STILL an unfinished, buggy mess that is only JUST starting to get substantial improvements. Seems to me the only reason these hotfixes are happening is because they're trying to gather up as much goodwill from their customers as humanly possible after essentially announcing the superior Dust 514 and make sure that when Legion DOES come around, that the balance and core fundementals aren't as colossally broken as they were when Dust came out.
