In case anyone asks, how is this Dust 514 related? All of the concept art for the units was done by former Dust 514 concept artist Galan Pang. His portfolio can be viewed here.
Here are some of the early sketches he did for the project.
ItGÇÖs a turn based PvP strategy game with some of itGÇÖs roots in chess. It started out as a board game I was working on that I would play with friends on occasion. Eventually one of them suggested we make it more publicly available. Some of the mechanics are inspired by Eve Online and Dust 514GÇÖs PvP systems. Things like range versus damage, and movement speed versus effective HP. Also when building units, you select the frame and the turret type that will be equipped on that unit to create a handful of combinations for countering and adapting to your opponents strategy.
It was a lot of fun to make, and I learned a ton from the whole experience. Analytics are built in to track game statistics for future balance changes. Let me know what you think! |

Servers are active right now if anyone wants to try it against a human opponent. Also when the servers inevitably die for the night, I sure wouldn't mind if you share the link with someone to join up with you.
Or you can open the game in two tabs and play with yourself. |

May not be the 100% best way to balance the game. Just because a person can move chess pieces doesn't mean they can actually play real chess. Don't make a CCP mistake with balancing your game. Put some real thought into it.
It is a strategical game with hard coded entities, variables, inside of a single map of simple design. Just some simple math should put you on the right track. I could also suggest that you look into Finite State Machines. I have this book called Programming Game A.I. by example by Mat Buckland, it is pretty good. With this you can create A.I. Players and create set of strategies for them. So that people can play whenever they want. Also with this experience you can always set the A.I. to play itself to create a simulator while you slowly tweak it with each run.

May not be the 100% best way to balance the game. Just because a person can move chess pieces doesn't mean they can actually play real chess. Don't make a CCP mistake with balancing your game. Put some real thought into it. Most people are going to go play your game and just play randomly. That won't balance your game. Balancing a strategical game takes good strategy.
It is a strategical game with hard coded entities, variables, inside of a single map of simple design. Just some simple math should put you on the right track. Just grab a pen and paper and it should be easy enough to do.
Another route I could also suggest is that you look into Finite State Machines. I have this book called Programming Game A.I. by example by Mat Buckland, it is pretty good. Which would also go a long way in balancing a game of this type if you wish to go that far into it. The book is for C++ but it is the concept that is important. I seen a bunch of online tutorials use examples from this book rewritten for other languages.

You're hired!
Don't worry, I've been careful about balance so far. Most of it comes from running the numbers through all scenarios on paper first and then testing them in controlled situations. The data will only affect decisions if it's horribly skewed, and it will have other factors involved too (like the player's win rate, the strat they used, etc).
I appreciate the advice, and believe me, I would have implemented AI if I knew how. It would solve so many issues, and I would probably even play it more often than I already do. I'll look into it for if we decide to continue working on this. Which hinges primarily on how it received, otherwise this was just a fun experiment. |

Nice, I do mobile app design for a living. The programmer I was working with specializes in web app programming, so we decided to go that route. The original design was more of an analog control system instead of tiles on mobile. A realtime battle where the units move slowly to allow time for decision making. Talent and technological limitations put us where we are now, c''est la vie.
I'd like to keep going with it, but like I said, AI would be necessary. The bigger vision for it was to have something similar to Planetary Conquest in that each battle affects a larger map, and having resources you can use to expand on a tech tree to unlock side-grade units. Similar to Risk, in a way. Also multiple Drone Masters on both sides of a single battle on a larger map.

Building a unit costs 140 heat, while max heat threshold for every frame type is 120. This is to put a soft limit on the number of drones you can build in a game, and promotes building few and using them efficiently rather than hiding in a corner and zerging your opponent.
Bubaloo1 wrote:lol you destroyed me so badly. I did manage to beat wise guy three times in a row though . I feel like railguns could use a buff. Also, the replenish drone/overheat mechanic is kind of confusing looking for a game now if anyone wants in
Railguns are in a need of a buff. I don't want to increase their damage though so that they don't compete with medium turrets. I'm leaning towards a +1 to range so that light and medium frames can kite and use it as a harassment tool against units that stray away from the Drone Master. Currently rails are VERY situational, in that when they're equipped on a heavy frame, and that heavy is being supported by the Drone Master, they can quickly dispatch an assaulting light frame. It needs more application than that. Specifically for units that are roaming the field.
Last night about 200+ games were played in total, and I got a lot of great data from it. I'd like to elaborate a bit on how I've been balancing this thing for those interested.
The game started as a board game prototype way before any code or assets were created. I collected a lot of info about which units people were using and the situations that called for them. Once the game reached a point where it seemed that everything had a defined role, and the game was feeling more strategic and less of a practice in min/maxing, we decided to start production.
Everything is kept on a spreadsheet for quick reference. Notice there are a few turrets, frames and abilities that aren't in game yet. Those are still in testing on paper. Once the numbers are tested against the other drone and turret combinations, as well as combinations supported by a Drone Master repairing them (pro-strat), they'll be plugged into the item list and be buildable during debug games, a game mode and item table only accessible with dev hax.
After testing the same scenarios in controlled situations, we start playing to win. Once we're comfortable with all the potential counter builds and counter strats used in testing, we unlock them for public use. |
