1. Which variant is the best? Note that I will spend most of my time fighting in cqc against mainly scouts and heavies 2. Which suit is the best to use it on assuming I don't want the minmatar commando 3. Is it viable in pc? 4. Any general tips on usage? I have trouble hitting people at range and get absolutely destroyed by heavies. 5. Damage mods or shield extenders?

Try to use splash to your advantage. 5. Damage mods work really well, but you might need the shields for guerrilla warfare and surviving.

The normal one is very good, but the Assault one is slightly better because putting more rounds out in a faster period of time means that there is more smoke, throwing of the enemies aim.
Though the Breach is only good against Sentinels, against anything else it flops like a pancake. As for being viable in PC, I can attest that it's viable with the Matari Commando, but I haven't tested it without the Commando. Though 2 People with a Boundless AMD can shut down any Scout squad in the city.
In terms of usage, you'll want to push them into an enclosed space, where finishing them off with splash will be easy. As for use in Long Range , I'd say practice with leading your target. Though in PC you should use it as a defensive weapon.
Without the Commando, you should equip 2 Modifiers. Though if you tell me what suit you're using, I could give you a few fits that would work well with a Mass Driver.

[Assault] Boundless MD [Assault] Boundless MD - Tower [Assault] Core MD [Assault] Freedom MD
I honestly haven't used GalScouts since 1.3, so I can't really say what would be a good fit with them sadly. Though I swamped out a hive for an F/45 on my Breach MD suit because I figured you'd only use it against Sentinels.

1. The normal one is good for close quarters(High Damage focused blast radius). The assault is better for open maps(less damage but covers a much greater area if the enemy has lots of room to move). (Don't bother with the breach. Just use the normal or assault variants!)
2. I guess any suit will do but the commando's are the best because you can carry a light weapon as a backup if you can't use the mass driver(i.e enemy too close or out of ammo)
3.Yes however, friendly fire can happen very easily in PC so unless you communicate what area you are bombarding, its better to use more precise weapons.
4. Mass Driver tips
- Keep your distance and find elevated areas to fire from. Lot easier to direct your shots from above. -The rounds travel in an arc so when shooting ranged targets you need to aim well above(sometimes you are literally firing more into the sky than at the enemy) adjust your aim as necessary. Oh bring a nanohive(ammo goes fast) -Heavies have a resistance to splash damage(A direct hit will do full damage but tricky), You can still kill them but takes many rounds(most will tank it very easy) Do not fight up close with them. You can break the logi link if you find one in tow. -Mass Driver's role is to bombard a very crowded area with explosives(i.e objective or any contestant point) Thus clearing out the enemy or killing enemies in close proximity to each other. -The MD is not ideal for one-on-one duels. Rifles will do more/faster damage face to face.
5.Depends on your suit. Shields have 20% damage resistance to explosive weapons(Protection from mishaps). Damage mods will do more damage per shell. Just depends on what you are comfortable with.

1. The Basic wins out on DPS over the Assault, but used correctly, the Assault Version can be truly devastating. It depends where you fight and how close to your enemy you fight.
Assault variants are better for long range suppression, mopping up damaged enemies and basically hitting as many people as possible. The Basis is better for setting up killzones, scattering enemies and overall DPS.
Don't bother with the breach unless your a CQC Sentinel hunter, in which case why aren't you using a shotgun, or knives.
2. The best suit is almost always going to be the Minmando, it's got both damage and staying power, although the lack of mobility makes getting bull rushed a huge problem.
Other than any suit that fits the Minmatar doctrine of hit 'n' run will be sufficient. You need to focus on harrassing tougher players and Alpha damaging the weaker.
3. There are more weapons that are MORE viable, but it can be incredibly powerful when used as part of team, not for lone wolfing.
4. Lomg Range is not the weapons designed purpose, unless their in a killzone. The weapon works best with a height advantage, or into spots where you know your enemy can't escape no matter how loosely you aim.
Direct damage is not necessary against medium and light suits so aim at the feet. Heavies will ONLY take any meaningful damage from direct hits due to thier explosove resistances.
Always ensure their is a box between you and an enemy heavy, remeber travel time can also be your friend.
5. Damage Mods, but only 2, after which the diminishing returns makes extenders a better choice. Don't focus on eHP but do ensure you have decent rep rates, you're gonna spend alot of time darting in and out of cover, a high armour repair rate helps you get the most from it.

Use the Assault variant and do this:
-Melee and hold R3 in
-Shoot off round and hold R1 in
-Keep R1 held down
-Repeatedly Melee to fire off 2 rounds at once
You'll get the benefits of the Assault splash and it will do twice the damage since two rounds will be fired at once. Lol @ bugs... |

MD is perfect with a Minmando - or on a Minlogi as last resort when your heavies just popped...
Use the standard variants. Learn how to go for direct hits. Lead your shots. In PC/FW, be careful!
Use the disorientation as your ally, try to aim behind the enemy, so his first reaction will be turning that way (if he doesn't see the trail of the shell). Use walls/ceilings to explode the shells in places above you. Even antennas on roofs are viable detonation triggers. Try to stay behind the main force of an assault and lob the rounds over the frontline guys into the second row of enemys (the logi bunch). If you have scouts among your own, just hammer the area with grenades, scouts will go down faster than your heavies (even with ff on).
One of the biggest advantages in pubs is the unrevivability of clones that got killed by explosives... (In PC there is often a non revive policy, so not as important).
IN 1 on 1 situation, you will need cover or fast movements-strafing to reduce the dps of the opponent.
Open field against a calm rifle user of the same level you are toast! |
