This has been here for quite some time, and its really annoying.
Now that most of the suits have changed I think the strafe speed should decrease. I think that decreasing the strafe speed to 0.75 x movement speed should work wonders.
The problems it solves are:
- Invincible strafing scouts (Kinda nerf to scouts)
- Annoying KBM users
- A better gun game
I remember the strafe speed increase was a mistake on CCPs part and they decided to keep it, but at that time, scouts didn't have cloaks, and suits had pretty low HP, so strafing was kinda good for surviving.
But now we have 1500+ HP heavies, 600+ HP scouts, 800+ HP assaults, that just keep strafing; making it impossible to kill them.
Please think about this.

Scouts agile because they are scouts. You have to plan your shots better.
KBM? Thats the new excuse? A KBM used in Dust has no efficiency compared to PC games. Im willibg to bet that those who ise KBM only use it for sniping and tanks.
I disagree with nerfing strafe speeds.

So you look only at one end of stick and you 'consider that it is good for all'?
- scouts are 'invicible' because of seed in general. Smal client/server desynchro at possition makes some targets to take far less dmg then you makes mistakes from tracking targets. But it is not only 'strafe' but speed in general in DUST. (also bug with slowing when you get shoot - comes from desynchro client/server) - so also you ask for more heavy nerf for more slowing it?
My advise: use area dmg weapons.
Not much time left...

Strafe speed wouldn't need to be nerfed if CCP just added momentum to dropsuits. Then you wouldn't be able to quickly change left if all your energy is going right.

This is exatly right, I used to have a mouse plugged in in front of me and switch to it when sniping... DS3 is better than keyboard and mouse on consoles because the input lag is horrible but you don't notice it on a DS3

I disagree with nerfing strafe speeds. Nobody ever plans their shots in a game with a zero sum momentum shift built into the netcode. To make that clear -- you're going one way, or you're going the other. The netcode doesn't bother to show you slowing down your turn or shifting slowly. This makes movement observations erratic as hell and impossible to predict unless the strafer in question is doing an absolutely terrible job and simply goes back and fourth with exact muscle memory and no deviation. Classic arena shooters like Quake and UT figured this out early and solved the problem by introducing weapons with slower moving projectiles. This effectively "filled space" and denied where an enemy could move, thus making an enemies path more predictable as he could only move in certain areas without willingly hurting himself. The greatest achievement in this regard was the Shock Rifle. Games that do NOT have a zero sum momentum shift are those like Halo -- you can actually observe your enemy slowing down from left to right, and even in the case of circle strafing the smaller movements are noticeable, albeit still delayed. This has to be done with a much slower strafe speed however. Dust is actually in the worst position possible. Nearly all projectiles are super fast moving or hitscan, and strafe speed is incredibly fast. Competitively this would make it something of a running joke, except the frame rate is so bad that such issues are already overshadowed. But, uh, yes. It does make scouts kinda OP.
I know what the **** he is talking about you dumb ass
Simple stuff man, not complicated. If scout is strafing left, some instincts can kick in so that you predetermine his movements, planning your shots so that he moves into them. You can force him to play your game.
You don't need a novel to understand that man

You're right that the KBM gives only marginal advantages in certain areas (slightly quicker change of direction while strafing), but has shortcomings in others (can't really circle strafe).
However, you're wrong if you think the only ones who use KBM are sniping or tanking. I am one such player (I play infantry) and there are others.

They accidentally set strafe speed to 100% of movement speed for a while. Eventually they nerfed it to 90%. So that issue has already been dealt with.
Set it lower still and lights and mediums would go from having a 20% chance of surviving a heavy looking at them for one second to a 0% chance. I say this as a proto heavy, scout, and logi. |

Are people still throwing around the old KB/M strafe fallacies?
Get a mouse and keyboard and get a ps3 control. Press A and D in game and notice the movement. Now get the ps3 control and press left and right on the analogue stick - notice the exact same movement......
There is no difference. Instead of flinging out these wild and unsubstantiated claims, go and test them for yourself like I have.

Yes, it's ridiculous at times. So annoying when these guys start the dumb left-right dance at implausible speeds.
On a side note, i've been thinking a lot of why the G-commando sucks and i've found that strafing speed plays a huge role in this. In close quarters, you have few chances of beating a militia suit that strafes so fast when you're an easy target and strafe slower. Too tricky to aim and no chance of dodging any bullets.

in the months i played dust i recall a total of 5 times where i believe i was in a situation where i was outstrafed. (me half way up a hill sticking to terrain and my opponent up top looking down) and maybe 2 were kbm. none were scouts.
strafing is fine. its a valid fps tactic that was temporarily lost to antiquity because of cod, its not some cheat. now if we want to get to the subject of turning speed. a heavy shouldnt be able to turn as fast as a light suit but thats unrelated.
