How do I use it? The Caldari one to be specific? I keep trying to play it as an Assault, but It's too slow for that.

Stay far, far away and rail things to death. (A)RR + Tac Sniper as above.
Reality is the original Rorschach.

Get set up on high ground with a LP Specialist Rail Rifle and a LP Specialist Swarm Launcher. 2x Complex Damage Modifiers, a Complex Shield Recharger (dat craptacular shield regen), a Complex Reactive Plate, Gauged Nanohives so you never run out of ammo. If you're in a good spot, no vehicle can stay close and you can gun down infantry very fast while limiting your exposure to returning fire.
Alternatively, swap the Complex Shield Recharger for an Enhanced Recharger and the Complex Reactive Plate for a Complex Armor Repairer. Loses 2 shield regen/sec and 60 armor HP in exchange for an extra 6 armor/sec. Your call. |

I use commandos as more of a "support" alongside my friendlies. They provide extra DPS where needed, and I can imagine the Caldari one being a "camp out at long distances" playstyle.
Currently it is the optimal suit for snipers due to the extra damage it gets to rails...but I've seen a few others use it effectively as long-range harassment. In other words, preventing players from moving forward because if your long-range firepower.
As with all commandos, the best weapon choices are to compliment each other. Use a shield melter with a rail for maximum effectiveness. A long range weapon and a CQC weapon...
Slot layout should focus on damage and recovery. You should already have a large pool of hp, you just need to account for the lowered recovery that commandos have. boosting the damage bonus commandos get plus prof bonus plus damage mods that affect BOTH weapons can end up with some crazy values, and that's exactly what you'll need in order to make up for your large hitbox.

^This guy knows whats up. Damage and recovery are the fitting focus. You can also do a duel role by carrying the racial rifle and and swarms. Therefore if you see vehicles run rampant you can switch to your swarms to kill or at least harass them so they aren't as effective(Running enhanced or better light damage mod will help swarms as you'll find most vehicles will run off before you can get the killing blow otherwise).
If infantry rush then you would use your rifle. Keep your distance but if the enemy moves in your extra damage means you kill quickly and while ducking in cover/reloading your ehp will be ready the next time you pop your head out.

As everyone has said above, kite (stay out of range and provide supporting dps).
My choice of weapons are either and ARR and RR or (on lower tier suits) RR and AR. Of course, the RR is for long range engaugments. Stay out in the open (to see people coming, unless being sniped) or on buildings/high places and rain hell. The AR/R is used when, inevitably, someone gets too close, both of which I've found tear people apart.
I would not run solo with this set up. Stick with others, even if they're blueberries, and let them engage the enemy from up close while you hang back. |

Inversely to the ARR + TSR proposal which is solid. You can also run overwatch with a standard/charged SR and a standard RR.
Personally I prefer the overwatch method with commandos since that is where they truly shine, you will generally be playing second fiddle to assault suits running an assault like build. It's is also cheaper as the standard SR and standard RR are cheaper isk wise than the ARR and TSR. |
