With the recent announcment that CCP is bringing back BPO's and that there is aswell a high possibility that more are to follow they basically admitted that the long term plan for the game has beeing cancelled. The marketing probably prognosed that making a quick cashgrab with BPO's (lots of people asked for them to return) is a better choice then selling single run suits/weapons/vehicles to the players. So what does this mean? Well the game probably doesnt has a too long lifespan anymore so they decided to get as much money out of it before the fat lady has sung and the curtain falls. I say the game has somewhere around 6 months~1 year left of life into it and then it will share the same fate like MAG.
So enjoy the game as long it lasts cause we are about to expierience the final act from Dust514. Oh and allways remember fanfest cause thats the way how CCP will announce the end of the game. 1 day before it gets shut down we will get a a announcement where the devs will thank us but "unfortunately" have to close the servers for the game.

That is how I've taken it, that Legion and what was left of the Dust game plan has become an epic failure and will not exist for much longer. So it's like everyone said, it's a last time cash grab attempt, like we all suffered with the omega boosters. Makes more sense now why we had that recent triple SP event as well.
The only BPOs I would ever buy would be LAVs.
Why am I still here yet?

I don't have a crystal ball and the game could be shut down tomorrow but...
It will remain viable as long as it turns any sort of profit either via actual revenue or development data for Legion (which I don't believe will ever come to fruition).
But I digress...If selling BPO's or having SP events to stimulate booster sales or whatever gimmick CCP can uncork extends DUST 514's life span then I am all for it.
All those PS3's that gamers sell back to Gamestop etc get refurbished and sold elsewhere (around the globe) so a FTP game available to 10's of millions of PS3 owners that aren't necessarily latest gen tech consumers still represents a opportunity for a longer game life cycle.
In short, I believe there is a good chance DUST 514 will exist longer than most expect.

This. If anything it should extend the lifespan. The only thing that a decrease in AUR sales will cause is an end to the "hotfixes." |

I think you're blowing this whole thing out of proportion. Considering that the secondary market is no longer planned for Dust and the game needs more player retention, BPO sales wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Don't forget that CCP Frame said those BPOs will be here only for a limited time which obviously means it probably won't make too much of an impact considering not many players are playing this game and many have given up to the point that they're probably not even reading the forums anymore let alone log into the game and thus miss out once the promotional items have run out of time. Even if they come back because of the promotion it only means more money for CCP Shanghai to use on Project Legion which is something I support.

It's been fun ya'll but it's time to move on. IIRC (and I'm sure somebody can correct me if I'm wrong), the reason BPOs were removed was because it was believed they would have a detrimental effect on the in-game economy they were trying to implement. Then they implemented Planetary Conquest and screwed it up anyway.
Point being, now that there is likely no economy to screw up (not in Dust anyway), it doesn't matter if BPOs exist in the game or not. In fact, they could be seen as a good thing, especially if they decide to also bring back all the weapon, equipment, and high/low slot modules -- reason is because it will allow noobs to grind for a bit, retain all the ISK they earn, build a small warchest, and break out their own proto whenever they are getting stomped.
It actually evens the playing field, to a certain extent.
As to whether the return of BPOs is a ill omen -- whatever. No game lasts forever, and nothing is ever free. Dust doesn't have a subscription model, so it has to find some way of increasing sales to pay for devs and servers, and BPOs are a great way to do that.
Look, deadbeats: the money you spend on BPOs is no different than the money you would spend on a modest subscription fee every month. You're not "buying a BPO" that's supposed to last in perpetuity, Forever And Ever Amen, so much as "paying to keep the lights on". Do you people even business, bros?

If their still making games for the system , then it's not outdated .
I've seen somewhere , where Sony is already in the process of developing the PS5 ... so I guess the 4 is already out dated because of this ?
Their still developing some great and wonderful looking games for the PS3 , what don't you people who talk like this not understand ???
I've had games that were outdated that they don't make games for anymore ... that's how one knows that a game is truly outdated .
I don't let people or the market dictate the actions of how and where I spend my money , because it's in their interest to keep you buying " new " items and telling you what the " trends " are .
I don't fall for it .
If this game was outdated , there would be no production for it and consumers would not go to places like game stop and continue to purchase the PS3 .
You sound like one of those pricks who talk about PC master race .
Delta should come with a SP or infantry SP refund so that a campaign for one is not needed .

Actually, I'll thank Ratatti. Everything I've read has pointed to him being the one that "saved" dust after what everyone is calling the "Rouge Wedding." Sure, Dust will die eventually, but Ratatti will make sure we have fun up until the very end. Now, I'm going to start saving money. When do they come out?
btw, CCP, what's wrong with you? There are tons of markets in less developed countries that "owning" a ps3 is the big thing. how come you don't market to them?

What worries me most is that the icelandic CCP old guard responsible for making all of the most truly crappy decisions regarding DUST in all likelihood has not changed. They(or he, i really don't have a fkin' clue) destroyed the potential of DUST and is keeping the lid on Legion.
For my money, until parties unknown in Reykjavik are removed from a position of influence re Shanghai, we'll get the same destructive decision-making in Legion that we had in DUST.

I think this would suck, because then, you're not buying dlc, but being forced to pay to get the complete experience. BPO's are essentially DLC and good DLC should always compliment a game, or expand on it, but not keep you from experiencing the full game if you decide not to purchase it.

Wow, bravo. Best rebuttal I have seen so far. And yes, I can vouch for you that the principle reasoning behind the removal of the BPOs was that CCP figured out they were a detriment to the incoming secondary market for Dust and possibly the industry in Eve Online should they have merged at all. It's now clear that will never happen for Dust, so let's just bring back the BPOs and have fun for once without having to worry about screwing up an economy that never came.

Let me point you to the following quote.
CCP Z wrote:
Hello,
And sorry for not giving any answer for quite a while, but as you can see in my other thread, Market has been my focus for the past couple of months (and a lot of secret other stuff of course!).
Basically, a lot of good points were made during this discussion and I had some long chats regarding the Progression System. I looked at all the different proposal, our vision for what the Progression for Legion should be evolved a lot since Fanfest.
So a lot of changes will be made from the presentation I made. Even though we want to change the way Progression was in DUST, we still want to keep some important mechanics you guys love.
So for now, I will close this Thread and get back to you as soon as we have the Progression 2.0 Design.
Thanks a lot for all your Feedback, it helps us a lot making the right choice for our game.

You really think NEX was the reason WiS was cancelled?
Not the fact that it added zero gameplay, initially had the original dock environment removed and took a good while to load the quarters every single time you docked, even if you had only just undocked?
Not the fact that a huge amount of players didn't have the pc to run the carbon engine? The fact itIt bricked a lot of players' GPUs?
If you're going to bitter vet, you might aswell get your facts straight lol

Likewise the same people who pushed for key presses of material at each EvE Fanfest whether it was that cameo in 2010/2012 (forgot exact year) for WoD to the Legion presser? If so then EvE is kind of screwed and unlike other companies their own proven talent is EvE. Valkyrie in so far as attention and press just got smashed by "No Man's Sky" even if the player direction and interaction is different.
Michael Arck wrote:So now FF didnt prove such, now its the BPOs? How long.people expect this game to last.on a outdated console.anyway? Less talks about a unknown future and more about the apparent present.
The SINGLE saddest thing about the "it was a console release" is that Dust514 premiered on a platform WITH NO COMPETITION ON SHOOTING GAMES OUTSIDE COD. They FAILED to beat 1...ONE...game. MAG was already shuttered, Resistance 2 & 3 already long past and UnChartered was still a heavy single player orientation versus competitive multiplayer.
Expand the game to PC and you had several other titles just from STEAM to compete with. It's a scary thought that CounterStrike gets 1/4 the active playerbase on weekend on Steam that Dust514 gets. IF this game featured just on PC it would've been more brutalized and left for dead given it's state over 1.5 years. Game imbalances, introduction of content leading to longterm heartaches is and never was a by-product of it on the PS3.
Whenever someone goes "it was on the PS3 so it was bound to fail" you realize that:
- CCP can't seem to make anything outside an mmo~sandbox and
- If they can't get a FPS title right on a smaller audience base with less competition this is a bad predictor for future attempts such as Legion
- and you usually undo your wrongs with new talent acquisition AND new key personal in related fields in a proven series/title.
But what Dust514 gets is broken leadership for a 1+yr, we get Jean Gaudechon who worked on Battlefield which had a metacritic scores of 10 pts higher than Dust514 and, to top it off, they'll try to rehash this into Legion with Legion still in longterm development and Dust514 still in the "kinks to be worked out" phase. And the worse part is, I don't think they ever hired someone for public relations management and interaction because I think that's the biggest thing they've needed the whole year over anything at all, period.
Most gamers, myself included, maybe hypercritical but wouldn't it make sense before moving onto Legion to figure out where you went wrong with Dust, figure it out, pan out the details then leave it be and THEN work on Legion to avoid making the same crap mistakes you did because CCP is getting the mo of "developer whose game is being released while in Beta far longer than any other company".
And we all joke about this and can toss up games that, when released, have issues known since beta and feel like beta. A year is pretty damn generous when thinking about the game being in beta. Whether it was the cloak, the 2-suit game dominance, the rise and fall of the maddy. None of this had to do with the PS3, fixing it took longer on the PS3 but even introducing it and the backlash it created was a CCP folly. |

Oh and allways remember fanfest cause thats the way how CCP will announce the end of the game. 1 day before it gets shut down we will get a a announcement where the devs will thank us but "unfortunately" have to close the servers for the game. if theya re just standard suits i see no problem with them as standard suits are only 3k a pop

Coincidence? I think not.
Your tinfoil hat needs to be adjusted.

DUST 514 is just a beta for Legion.
I could care less what they do at this point. It won't matter at all in Legion
