I think you have to have PS Plus to play any multiplayer games online for the PS4. However, that is not needed for other online apps like Netflix.
I will also say that I love PS Plus, and I would get it regardless of whether I had to in order to play games online.

48 games per year with large discounts on the PSStore, and other features such as auto update. For only $50. Even without the discounts and features, that's only $1.04 per game. Even if I hate the game that's a good deal!
Sorry if I sound like a salesman here, but that's a great deal no matter how you look at it! |

There is no such thing as good deal wen it comes to greedy companies the only ones that end up winning is them. Except Gabe and his drones of PC master race get good deals on steam not long ago they were selling all tomb raider games 1 to 4 for only 5 bucks, when have you seen playstation do that? lol. They still got games like nfs carbon from 2006 for the psp cost 19$ dollars and tomb raider 1 for 10$. that is just pure bs. |

So, basically I can rent 2 games and get small discounts with a a yearly subscription. That doesn't sound good at all. There's no way I'm spending enough on video games per year to make that worth it.
How do multiple accounts on a system work for the PS4? Like, if the owner of the system has a PS+ account but I want to have my own character/stats while playing on their system, does my account also have to be subscribed to PS+?

no, if PS+ is on the system, the online abilities should apply to ALL accounts on the system, but only on said system, if the account s used on a system that doesnt have a ps+ user then all benefits of plus no longer apply

@ Cass
Given that I have easily played 200 hours on the PSN games I have rented, could have even been 400 hours, you are talking minimum .25 cents an hour. That doesn't even take into account the $10 I saved buying the first season of Telltale's Walking Dead.
That, for my money, is well worth it. That might not be the case for lots of people, maybe due to time constraints or for other reasons. As for myself, I have easily saved myself money over the time I have been a member.

warlord. playing on ps4 compared to ps3 is like night and day. sooner or later you will have to make the jump anyway. however, it really depends on your situation and what you are into. only you can answer that question for yourself. it took me awhile to make the jump and i am glad i did. ps plus is a mere 50 bucks a year. |

I honestly don't know how Sony makes money from PS+. It's that good.
So it may be mandatory, but that's like buying a car with a mandatory sat-nav run by EDI from Mass Effect.
Destiny won't kill Dust.
CCP already did that.

general online gaming liek COD, BF, NFS ect yeah you need PSN+ for it. games like elder scrolls online or any other MMOs which require a subscription i don't think require psn+ to play online. but that may vary between games

As others have mentioned PSN gives some nice bonuses (although I have no interest in it) and many free games.
And so it goes.
