Sometimes the passive scan doesn't work anymore, today I got 2 games in a row where my passive scan wasn't working at all. I'm a Min scout with Ewar skills level 5 or 3, and I was flanked all the time, even by heavies, so I suspected a problem. I infiltrated the enemy position and sit there with my cloak on to not get killed. The passive scan was definitely not working, on my radar, the only enemies showing up were those I was seeing, there were 2 militia guys and one heavy something like 5-10 meters behind me, and none of them was appearing on the radar. I did several tests, each was confirming that my scan wasn't working at all. When rotating in the middle of the enemies, they were disappearing of my radar as soon as I was losing sight on them. When sitting next to a turret, enemies hacking/manning it weren't showing up if I hadn't a direct view. However, equipment was still appearing. I think it's a problem of scan profile/precision. I climbed hills and sit right behind an enemy sniper. He was a Calmando, so even with a complex profile dampener he can't get under my scan, and he wasn't appearing on my radar either. That bug disappeared for the third game, but during those 2 games you can guess that it was nearly impossible to play decently with my 200HP and my NK |

Passive scans only pick up things in front of you.

Completely wrong, passive scan is 360-¦
And even when the guy was in front of me with a small obstacle between us it wasn't working |

Passive scans works on 360-¦ for limited range(I do not know this range exactly but it have to be something like up to 4-5 meters). Beside that passive scan detects everything that is higher then your precision and in front of you (60-¦). There is only one exception to this - it's detect everything that is higher then original ground level, and in me honest opinion this is broke, because Active Scanner can see literally everything. Just try to test it with small hill.
In the middle of outpost you can see everyone through solid concrete walls, regardless they are on roof or in basement(research outpost), but if some fat Heavy baster hides behind small hill, he and his giant HAV next to him are invisible to your scan, no matter how much you have invested to EWAR and what modules you fit.. and thats **** up.

Range of passive scan is 10 meters for medium and heavy suits, 20 meters for scouts, with my skills and my range amplifier, my scout has a scan range of 36 meters. Passive scan goes through everything, so in all the examples I gave, the guys I wasn't scanning should have been scanned. |

On this map standing on F5/6 with proto Gallente Scout with 2xprecision modules and all skills on lvl5, I can not see anyone on F4/5 because they are behind hill.
Passive Scanners are not perfect.

Ok maybe that hill has a problem, but the passive scan is supposed to go through everything, And there are ton of other hills through which I can guarantee you'll scan people |

Because I've been a scout for ages, I've used my passive scan during hundreds of hours in nearly every parts of all the maps. And something I like to do is hunting snipers, and for that I often need to explore the hills and 80% of the time I find them thanks to my scan (the 20% remaining are thanks to my eyeballs). It's pretty easy to test if it works, take a scout and fill all your low slots with range amplifiers, you'll see that you can scan people through everything |
