1. Is it possible to efficiently use the laser rifle on a suit other than the amarr assault and amarr commando? [I use the amarr assault]
2. Is the proficiency skill useful? [I have read on the forums that the scrambler rifle proficiency skill is not useful, is this also the case with the laser rifle?] |

1) Every suit will be good if U know what U are doing... More highs, more dmg modes.
You will be able to "shoot" 70-76 ammo before overheat.
I think myself about small focused laser amarrian scout: Bzzzzzzzzz...cloak....Bzzzzzzzzz from new

2) Proficiency give U dmg bonus to shields, damage mode will give U dmg bonus to both: shield and armor.
Got prof.5 with SCR and never regret that. |

I use it on a Cal Logi and an adv Cal medium frame on one account I only have lvl 4 no prof, but it works for me
I also use burnstalks I got from a CCP newsletter on my Gallente Commando for strict trLOLs.
Being able to monitor your heat buildup and pick targets effectively is key when using it on a non Amarr suit IMO. It really is a fun weapon to use from time to time. Stack DMG mods for armor or dual tankers..

2. Yes, but not really worth it.

1) You overheat on the 80th "shot" with Amarr assault at 5
2) The way I look at proficiency on the laser rifle is that the faster I melt away the shields, the more time and "shots" I can therefore dedicate towards melting away that armor. Also it's somewhat of a requirement for fitting optimization..

Think of the LR like this. You have to preheat for a second before sweeping over the target, that means a good chunk of your fire duration will always be wasted. Not only that, but you'll have to reload after each blast. So extending the amount of time you can spend in your max DPS state is incredibly valuable. You have very narrow windows of opportunity to be lethal with the LR. A small buff to a small window is actually a pretty big deal. I think the Amarr Assault is pretty critical for this reason.
I got proficiency 5 in the LR when it applied to both armor and shields. Now that it's just shields I'd get it to 4 just to unlock the fitting optimization skill. You will melt shields damn near instantly if you preheat so the proficiency skill is pretty weak. Put points into ammo and reload. You'll burn through ammo like crazy and you're constantly reloading.
Best PvE idea ever!

1) No suit other than the amarr assault truly shines with it, due to the way the damage formula works (dmg = base value + [scaling value * number of shots fired consecutively]. With scaling values starting at like .85 for basic and going up to IIRC 1.05 for proto)
2) Even with the large buffs to shield tanking that have come through... it doesn't really amount to much, you'll probably strip shields in maybe 1-3 less shots. Armor is still the more consistent and more common option.
That said lasers can be used on non assault suits and they are okay... but the bonus for the amarr assault is +4 shots fired per level, which can amount to IIRC about 1500 points of damage with a proto rifle, 3 complex damage mods and assault 5. If you want to burn people with the laser, the amarr assault is really the only option.
I had 2703 laser rifle kills in one weekend on the officer event placing in me afaik 3rd place for laser. You can trust me. |
