What the **** are you supposed to do when they pull an SMG on you?
The thing is like a fuckin' HP leech;
I always try to run to put some distance down so my pistol will work better but the SMG never ceases to miss it's just constantly draining HP. That's seriously the best I can do is run and hide when it comes to the SMG. Unless I have stacked two complex shield extenders and mass driver I find these little vampires to be a real ***** to deal with.
Shotgunner is running towards me, I'm backpedaling, usually being a good sport and using my pistol if there's a large enough gap between me and them, but then they pull out their SMG and it's like "**** get your main out this guy doesn't care about sportsmanship!" but then I'm dead.
It just seems that you really can't do too much about an SMG. Really hard to beat in CQC almost always have to outrange it. It seems that the best way to counter something is with its own race. For instance a good counter to a SCR would be something Amarr with lotta armor HP or a good counter to rails is shield stacking like a caldari. So minmatar ideology should be the best counter to the SMG which means just fuckin' running.....
No real offensive measures I know of can be taken against it. You're never going to see an SMG and say "I should get closer so my gun will work better" it's usually just "maybe I should go grab a combat rifle....". Of course I could try flanking but usually these scenarios are scout v. scout. Or scout v. forge heavy.
A lot of people use the SMG, it's very easy to use. I have respect for the SMG, I feel like it's an OG weapon that strikes a certain tune. But at the end of the day, the thing has perks like centipedes got legs. I feel like I should step down a step and go the easy route by choosing this weapon, but at the core it wouldn't make me happy. I like to be a sportsman with my guns but how do people enjoy using weapons with such little learning curve, such ease of use and such small margin of error?
My two cents. Any non-running away advice would be appreciated. Please do not start flame war.

The only things that beat it in CQC are the ACR, HMG, and a shotgunner with good aim or no points in operation.
My advice--use the bolt pistol and just backpedal--***** ******* scary
Or just be like everyone else and grab a fine rifle

Well the SMG is essentially the HMG's kid brother. It performs almost the same, just with less damage and magazine, and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. You do have a point in it has very few downsides, and I've often been shocked with the kind of range you can get with it aiming down the sights. Dare I say its better than the Magsec due to its awesome stability when aiming.
In general it should kick ass at close range, and it does, but maybe (and I say this with a heavy heart because I love the little guy) we should look at its falloff damage a bit. |

When you have an active aim assist that track targets for you and keeps you at a 80-90% accuracy rating at 1200 RPM.. What do you expect? lol.
"BUT DUSTS AIM ASSIST ISN"T THAT STRONG" Sure... if headshots killed you in one shot consistently.. it would be weak. But that isn't how DUST works... its about prolonged fire on target to actually kill them... otherwise they have a chance to escape or defend themselves.
If DUST had even the style of Aim assist Destiny has... where if you look down sight it snaps you on target... but you then would have to track that target largely yourself? It would be massively different...
But that is the plague of console... The only thing that makes Legion exciting.. Player to player duels will actually represent player skill and ability again. |

The SMG has been the sidearm of choice for so long that most people have them fully skilled. My little 'Toxin' is a bloodletter with 5 skills at Level 5. At that point you can use almost any of the sidearms as a thoroughly sufficient main weapon. As it should be. On my Amarr main alt, I use Scrambler Pistols on Gallente Scouts. Proto Sidearms are cost effective, not too CPU/PG hungry, and just more fun/gratifying sometimes.

I'm a Gallente Scout Scrambler pistoleer been using my babe since closed chrome. I like the difficult weapons or weapons that are more mental. I am satisfied by using the more difficult weapons, its a reward in itself.
That's another problem : SMG holds a monopoly, it's in everyone's back pockets. Also, a while ago I asked for a sharpshooter skill tree for the scrambler pistol and people told me it would be overpowered. But then you look at the SMG and you ask "where's the line in the sand? SMG has a sharpshooter skill tree..."

The only success I've really had against the SMG (hardcounter) is laying down two triage hives and weathering the storm. Most don't bother to shoot the hives and I end up out repping their dps. This, however, requires that you foresee the SMG coming, which is not usually the case. |

The ion pistol might become the most powerful sidearm (as long as you get close enough to use it that is...gallente weapons are supposed to be high dps, short range)
I think it just needs an increased RoF (as fast as you can pull the trigger), or possibly an assault variant that doesn't have a charge function but fires automatically.
It should work like a mini scrambler rifle with the charge shot dealing quite a bit of damage especially if you overheat right afterwards

No I expect you to die slowly while I chop strafe back and forth so damn fast I actually break physics and begin to phase through rounds. All the while I'm using an ultra-high DPI mouse with additional features that allow me to manually replicate the effects of Aiming resistance, fire burst weapons at fully-automatic speeds and here your friends footsteps aproaching from behind.
Because my lack of skill, tactical awareness and generally poor gaming etiquette can be subsided by simply using better real world gear than my opponent.
OP the SMG is popular because as you said it has a lack of downsides, it has good range and DPS compared to pretty much every other side arm. While I don't believe it to be overpowered, I do believe many of the games other sidearms need a few buffs to be competitive.
Flaylock: Lots needs to be dlne to this to make it competitive, would require a whole thread to domthe topic justice.
Bolt Pistol: Needs slightly better DPS, can be achieved by reducing the time between concurrent shots by 5-7%.
Scrambler Pistol: Needs a little of that ROF given back, plus a sligntly magazine buff as well.
Ion Pistol: Needs to be doing considerably more damage from the overcharge shot, since untanked scouts and frotline assault fits does not comprise most "soft targets"
Nova knives: Getting buffed looking forward to those.
Magsec: needs slightly less recoil and marginally better range.

The bolt pistol is great. Remember you don't want to be using it at close range, or hip firing it. It's a long range sidearm (it has a scope for a reason), and it hits like a truck. Aim down the sights, and take advantage of the aim assist, which really benefits the bolt.
I would love an assault version of the bolt, without the scope and that fires with no delay.
Edit: try combining the bolt with a scrambler rifle. Really nice weapon synergy there.
